Let me suggest, if you are just starting, that you sign up with Market Force (blue portal), Corporate Research International, Maritz and Bare. These are the companies most likely to provide you available jobs in any corner of the country. Beyond that, begin signing up with companies from a reliable list, such as the one here. What is BEST for one is not BEST for another. I am not in NC, but my BEST company would likely take you a whole lot of jobs to get to the 'good stuff'. And anybody shopping NC is not so likely to name names because all of us deal with competing shoppers on a daily basis.
Thanks Flash. I am currently signed up for all of these. I will continue to scour the boards for information. This is a great forum! Thanks.
There really is nothing that can beat taking the time to sign up with every company you can find and allow them to send emails. Some will flood you with repetitive emails and if you are not interested in the shops they offer, you can turn off their email privileges. Others will only email when nobody else has taken the job (which is your clue to check their website job board earlier in the month when something other than the dogs are left). Use your creativity, look at clients throughout your state when you sign up and if those clients have a presence in your area as well, check their job board more frequently. Make notes of when various companies post work. But most importantly, do every job well so you become their 'go to' shopper in your area.
That is good advice. Since joining the forum, I have signed up with about 40 MSCs. Since I am only doing this part-time, I think that is enough to keep me occupied for the time being. As opportunities wane, I will add more companies to supplement until I get a good comfortable base with a enough opportunities.
Your area may differ from mine. I am signed up with over 200 companies. In an average year perhaps 50% of them have one or more shops in my area. Of those that have shops, half to two-thirds of them do not have shops of interest to me: I am the wrong demographic, the fees are too low, they are currently having payment issues or they are just jerks to attempt to deal with. So in a given year I work with 10-20% of the companies I am signed up with and it is not necessarily the same companies year after year because clients come and go.
One trick is to be sure you have signed up with companies that are based in the state you live or want jobs. Although most MSC say they are nationwide - it usually follows that they "tend" to have more work in their immediate surroundings. So Confero and Service Performance Group are two off the top of my head that are based in NC.

that's a great idea. can you tell me if there is a place to find out the addresses of each of the MSC without going to each individual website. I periodically go to jobslinger and check available jobs in my zip code and then sign up with those MSC if not already registered. TIA
Try this site (I hope it is okay that i post a link?). Quirks is a Marketing Research journal and this is their directory of mystery shopping firms, you can search by type and by state.

Hope that helps!!
What a nifty site MickeyB! I checked my state and see a few missing, but as a starting point, it is really handy. I have certainly bookmarked it.

Links to useful materials (as opposed to trying to sell somebody something or collect a bounty by having them click on 'affiliation links') are a good thing.

Cool - thanks. They also have a focus group facility search engine - for those who like to participate in focus groups and want to sign up with facilities in their area. It is here:

I'm sure you're already aware of Customer 1st, but I do a few projects for them. They're based in NC and have shops there and in many southern states. The director, Carl Phillips, is a sweetheart, and the rest of the staff is a pleasure to work with as well.
