CorporEx LLC

Anyone heard of this company? Contacted me through Careers.com - said they were a shopping company since 1986 - yet when I looked all over their site, there was no contact info (other than a number & fax - two different area codes).

Google has no record of their phone & fax except for some bothersome complaints.

Hopefully, they are O.K. All they asked out of the ordinary was where I went to college and where I bank. So, is there anybody besides me that doesn't trust banks?? I said no bank.

What do you think??

CorporEx is a real estate and investment company. Frankly I would not give them the time of day. I strongly suspect you are setting up for a scam.
I think you're right. Everything I gave them about me can be found on the internet - so no harm done.

I'll let you know more after I hear from them.
This appears to be a scam. I would definitely not send them anything, especially any bank account info.
HEY -- GUESS WHAT??

I JUST RECEIVED A CHECK FROM CORPOREX FOR $2,830.00 !!

I haven't done anything but sign up with them. They stated that my first assignment would be by email - that was 11-11-2010, the same day the check was cut (postmarked 11/12/2010).

As yet, no assignment ... maybe a scam, huh?? The envelope (with their logo, etc.) is from New York, N.Y., the check is from a different company in Washington, D.C.

No letter, no instructions, no assignment -- just a check for $2,830.00

Such a deal, huh!?!
I received a check yesterday for the same exact amount, but I did receive a follow up email with an assignment to go to Walmart and purchase a 42 inch TV. It gave 3-4 different links to the walmart website for the different TV's and it said to choose 1. The TV's were around $500. I also received in that same email a word doc which was a report form basically asking mystery shopping questions like store appearance, interaction with store associate etc, was I greeted...3 pages of questions. Seemed pretty legit. I did not cash the check but i did deposit it into my bank account and my credit union said they had to hold for 2 days and its supposed to be released tomorrow. After doing research I am thinking that this is a scam so I wont be going out and purchasing anything. Matter fact Ive heard it really takes about a week to find out of a check is good or not. The email also said that I needed to submit the report form within 2 days of going to Walmart and to await instructions on what to do with the remaining money. I'm assuming from other things that Ive found online they they will probably ask me to wire it somewhere! So be careful if you DO cash it cause you will probably end up oweing the bank lol. I guess I'll find out soon enough. I'm not spending a dime of it.
It can actually take a whole lot longer than that for the check to bounce. It will have been forged off the legitimate account of the legitimate company named on the check. Unless the legitimate company's bank has gotten a heads up regarding the scam they may indeed process the check and the legitimate company will not know what hit them until their real checks start bouncing or they become aware that checks they never wrote are being presented. This awareness may take only a day or two or it might not occur until they go to balance their checkbook at the end of the month. Do don't make the mistake of thinking that after a week you are in the clear. Hopefully your credit union does not charge you a fee for presenting a bad check.
I'm going to give them a call this morning to tell them that I suspect it to be a bad check after doing some research online. such a shame that people prey on other people who are actually looking for REAL work at home and mystery shopping jobs.
Well I did call my bank this morning and told them that I thought its possible that this may be a scam and I was told to wait another week just to see but if it did end being a bad check I would be charged a $15 fee. :-( It could be worst! I could have spent that money and end up owing the bank almost $3000 back so I'd rather be out of $15 then $3000!!
my bank held the check for 2 days and the funds ARE available to me BUT I am not going to touch it. I was advised by my bank just to wait and see what happens.
tess,
I often takes 3 weeks or more for a forged check to be discovered, no matter how long they say. This IS a SCAM.

Based in MD, near DC
Shopping from the Carolinas to New York
Have video cam; will travel

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
ok thanks. I did figure that and its funny my credit union was less concerned about it then I was but I dont plan on touching it. I'll just wait for them to hear back from whoever and find out the check is bad. I'm already going to get charged the $15 fee for presenting a bad check so I guess there is really nothing else that I can do. Lesson learned. I did know enough not to try and cash it and go spend the money cause it IS available right now. Ive heard of people spending it right away and then owing the bank. not me. :-)
I also received a check from them for $2,800 but I have not touched it. I had a voicemail from them on Friday telling me they would email me my assignment on Monday but I have not received anything yet. I tried calling the person who called me on Friday but it goes straight to voicemail. I do not even want to deposit it until I talk to someone... Please let me know if it turns out to be legit or fake. I definately do not have the money to be scammed.
I just called the Better Business Bureau in Ny and they told me its a SCAM!! Do not deposit the money the check will bounce and you'll be out $2,830!!! Thank Goodness I had the sense to check before I made a big mistake! Hope this info helps!!!
I got one of those checks too! I called the issuing bank and they said the check is valid and the money is available. Really tempting.
I also called the isuing bank PNC bank and they told me it was a scam. PLus on the check the compny name is MIDASCO LLC. I google them and got their info and they a kind of contruction company. I called them and they are not associated with corporex and they never sent any check. These scammers are using legit company names in their checks and the companies are not aware of this. The people from this company asked me for copies of the check and said they will investigate and prosecute them.
@ Caravella what was the issuing bank for your check? I hear they are different. Mines says Wachovia.
Wow they are just stealing different companies' names!!! You should alert that comapny that their company name was stolen to commit fraud. I did, they were very thankful and thair are going to investigate and prosecute.
Wow, i cannot believe they just steal random company's info to scam people... I wonder what happens after the check is cashed.. Do they ask the people to buy stuff for them in the stores in order to get that merchandise or do they steal money from these different companies and launder it through the mystery shoppers? I insist these companies have to be notified that their are being victims of fraud. The thing is that when i called the company that was on my check, they actually did have an account with that bank! The check was somehow stolen from them! They told me it wasnt the design of check that they use but it was definately their bank... This goes deeper than just scamming people.. They steal from companies too!
Mely 1212 --

On my check - there was not address or telephone number for the bank (odd) and no telephone number for the company, just an address.

DEFINITELY A SCAM!

I never did get an email or assignment by mail, as they promised (Not that I had any intention of doing so ...)
I know its definately a scam.. I just want to investigate further to stop them. I work with an investigator and I would like to get to the bottom of this. I just want to find out about the other victims of this and alert the companies that are also being used in this scam. Someone has to stop this.. It can't only be labeled as a scam and that's it, the people responsible should be in jail.
I just got a similar thing. CorporEx LLC with the company name on the check different. Check was for $2,830 and assignment was to go by a wal-mart TV. Sure sounds scammy to me. I deposited the money "for deposit only" and the only bank name I gave them on the application was "I do have a bank account". What I don't yet understand is what they stand to gain by running the scam?

Q: When you deposit a check into an account, can the company get any useful information (i.e. an account number) from the deposited check?

Q: Can you send money online with only an account number and a routing number? If they can get that, they can probably take money from your account.

Q: What exactly is the game here?
The usual deal is that there are a couple of "shops" to be performed that have high purchase reimbursement and/or fees ($100 or $200 fee is not unusual in the scams). You now have "earned" a couple hundred bucks of the scam money sent, maybe reimbursed yourself for some items and now there is $1800 or more left that your 'last shop' is to send by Western Union somewhere. Of course they don't care what size the check was--it was fake. And they don't care how much you spend--your loss. And they want the fee to be attractive enough you fall for it. All they really want you to do is wire transfer $1800 to them, and when the check bounces, you have sent them $1800 of YOUR money that is not recoverable.

To your specific questions. If you look at checks you have written on your account that have been cashed you will usually find the account number--either written by the recipient or added to the check by the bank. That is not an issue in the faked check scams as the checks are forged and will not be returned to the forger anyway.

Some merchants and e-vendors do have the ability to receive payment with only an account number and routing number. I pay most of my monthly bills by providing them with this information. They do ask that I confirm the payment authorization usually by clicking on a pop up. I feel certain that someone with evil intent could probably do this as well without my ever knowing it was happening until it was done based on a check I wrote or a check I cashed. There would be interesting discussions with my bank because there are safeguards and limitations to who is authorized to do such things so it would be relatively easy to track back to them.

The game with these scammers is that Western Union payments can be picked up with little or no identification at any of many locations. In my area I could purchase a faked but authentic looking drivers' license for $60 at the flea market, so if Western Union wanted ID to pick up the money, I could provide the name on my faked license and then disappear without question.
It's definitely a scam, they want me to Western Union the balance ($2000) to St. Petersburg Russia!
