Informa asking for a background check

Hi,

I recently received an email from Informa about an assignment they are doing but they require a background check which they will pay for. I think everything is done online. Just wondering if anyone has done this before.

Not for Informa. Generally background checks are done where you are being 'more than a casual customer', and that generally means it is a revealed job of some sort. My overall reaction is that unless the shop is something I am willing to do on a revealed basis, there is no point in authorizing a background check. The pros and cons of reveal shops to me basically boil down to if I have revealed to the client in any context I can never do an anonymous shop there again (or at least not until the current staff has turned over). So generally it has to be an extremely lucrative job, a regularly scheduled reasonably lucrative job or a client who is never shopped otherwise.

Beyond that, it depends on your relationship with the company and whether you are willing to have them in possession of a background check. There are a number of companies I personally feel comfortable enough with for them to have it, one company to whom I have even been willing to submit a copy of my credit report, and some companies I regret having ever even given them my email address.

Personally I find the folks at Informa ok, but not high on my trust list.

I did this a few months ago with Informa for a special financial shop that paid $50. After I passed the background check they assigned a shop that was 55 miles away. I turned it down, and the scheduler apologized and said it really looked close on the map...yeah, duh...it was probably only an inch on the map.

I had this happen to me with another company, however this company was not apologetic at all. When I mapped the place after accepting a job, it ended up 5o miles away, give or take a few. What happened was; this company uses the "As the crow flies, not as the car drives" for distance approximation. It would have been nice if they gave me that information beforehand, since I don't fly. I called the company and told them that I was not going to drive that far. They told me if I didn't they would not pay for me past jobs and cancel my account. So I did it anyway because I wanted my pay for the other jobs. I was not very happy.

If I understand correctly, you were bribed to complete an assignment.
You accepted the shop and then cancelled after the location was revealed and mileage was calculated. If you did not complete the assignment, you would not be paid for jobs completed and you would be deactivated. That would be unacceptable, as well as actionable.

I wouldn't be happy, either. We all make choices we can live with. I wonder if you still shop with this company, and if you would share the name of the MSP.

Some of Informa's client's require a background check, for which they pay. They usually tell you if the shop is in your area before they pay for the background check.

And it is important to note that bobdav is clear that his situation was with a company other than Informa.

I have worked for Informa for a year, and I got that same email, but I do not work for them anymore.
