I have no problems with Bare & they just paid me.

No offense, but the computers at Kinkos are too expensive to use. It wouldn't be worth it, unless you are just trying to save your work history, which I would probably do, which is why I know it wouldn't be worth it.
The library might be open, and it is unconfidental to work in cafes.

No offense, but the computers at Kinkos are too expensive to use. It wouldn't be worth it, unless you are just trying to save your work history, which I would probably do, which is why I know it wouldn't be worth it.

I may be old and crotchety but I am finding in my dotage that the MSCs are becoming more demanding and paying less than before which was poor then. It is a great business for them but the poor shoppers are getting sc-----. Many are @#$%& about our government getting involved and I also do not like goverment regulation over business but someone has to stop the abuse that MSCs do to poor (literally poor) shoppers who have to work for peanuts. I shop for something to do....I feel for the shopper who has to do this and take this abuse of necessity.l
Hi all and thanks to the many posters for so much information. I'm a fairly new shopper so reading this forum is really really helpful.
There was a post awhile back that reminded me of something I'm being offered which when I read it carefully I decided not to do. Supposedly a reputable company and one mentioned here..but something says to me this is not right. They want me to go BUY the eyeglasses that turn from dark to light and vice versa and then return them...AFTER I send the eyeglasses to them...Duh? How am I going to return them in a timely manner if they have to be sent to the company? Sounds kind of scammish to me. And I dont care if they're paying a good bonus. Eyeglasses today with prescription can be $200 to $400 layout of money - and I should send them to the company before returning them to the store where I'm doing the shop? mmmm NO - I dont think so.
And thanks for the tipoffs about schedulers. I did an oil shop where it took me
three hours to fill out the questionairre and comments - and submitted it the same evening as the shop, as it had to be in by 10 AM the following day after the shop. Well I did the shop on Feb 17 and they showed that it was "processed" on Feb 19, as if received on Feb 19. That bothered me for a couple of days, and I decided to email the scheduler, thinking it might be because it was a holiday weekend after the shop. I said my printer/scanner automatically prints the date the thing was submitted on the bottom of the page and I'd be glad to fax it to her..She more or less said the process date didnt mean anything,??? I haven't been paid yet..and I'll kick up a fuss if they say it was late and deduct or anything like that - my first shop with them.. Meanwhile now they want me to have my tires rotated - have called me, emailed me... but I cant do it - maybe just as well til I see if I'm paid properly or not. And I wouldn't know to be cautious if I hadnt read all your posts here.
And that brings up another question? How come it takes 45 to 60 days for most of these mystery companies to pay you for the shop ? Makes me wonder if they are waiting for the client to pay them before they pay us.
Anyone know of any companies that pay within two weeks???

Great education on these threads: that the mystery shopper has to beware. Tis a shame.But since it's done all over the internet , the disreputables may figure they can get away with it and people wont follow up with the law. Apparently they're getting away with thousands of dollars by not paying and over periods of years, maybe hundreds of thousands or more.

Hello Barbara, and Hello Everyone:
I am a new shopper, but I did not fall into the practice of paying a company to get jobs. A few posts prior to this one, Jacob gave you the most precious information you can get as a shopper. He made the comment of applying to as many of the 250 companies he posted.
That is exactly what I did. I visit the site, read about the type of shops the company does, and if possible, look for the region they work in. I have applied to at least 20 companies. I plan on applying to at least 100 before the end of March. My email box is hit throughout the whole day, and I make an effort to visit all the companies I have applied to so I can view the job boards. I suggest you keep a notebook handy to jot down all the companies, usernames and passwords. Otherwise, you will lose track of everyone you are involved with.
I have done many phone shops (very easy and fast), apartment shops, auto dealership shops, fast food shops, and I am scheduled to try a couple of gas station audits. I even have video equipment that will be shipped to me within the next week to complete a couple of apartment shops.
Barabara, I vowed not to pay for any shops, and I went back on my word. I did do a burger joint, and got paid and reimbursed $11,00. Ok, I went over the $11.00 by 32 cents, but I am still getting paid to eat a very good meal.
So, don't spend any money to shop. Try the ones that pay you first, then when you have become confident of the companies' reliability: take a few bucks and do some shops where you get to keep the product, eat the food, or service your vehicle. I hope this helps some.
I have not gone one day in the last month without having the opportunity to self-assign, or apply to shops that are near to me. You most likely will find companies that have clients in your area. You might want to open a new email account. If you are anything like me, I have gotten bombarded by many get rich quick scheme emails due to the research I did before figuring out how others are doing this mystery shopping. It causes me to proverbially "eat the meat and spit out the bones," which takes valuable time away from searching out mystery shopping assignments I can do, and which pay very well. You need to be proactive to have any degree of success. I definitely see the advantages of working hard at this. Good luck, keep your head down, and happy shopping!

Dear Debra,
I think you can still enjoy shopping if you consider phone shops. When they pay $7.00 to $9.00 for less than 20 minutes of work, it is very rewarding. I have tried to wait out some of the shops to see if the fee goes up, but all I have gotten in return when I apply for the shop is, "Sorry, this shop has already been assigned..." So, I try to apply for as many on the list there is. If I apply to 20, I always get at least 4-5 out of it. Most times I don't have to call my local area.

Trish, your comment regarding taxable income is totally false.
The $600 threshold is only for the companies. If you make below $600 for a company they are not legally obligated to send you a 1099 reporting your income. However, just because they don't send you a 1099 doesn't mean that you don't have to claim the income. And just because they don't send you a 1099 doesn't mean that they don't have to claim the expenses they paid out to IC's for the shops they did. They have to pay taxes too and they will be claiming those pay-outs as labor or wages or some type of deduction, you can bet your bottom dollar.
One of these days if Obama has his way, those dribs and drabs of income are going to come back and bite you in the &*#. Trust me!

I think this must be a common misconception about taxes and income. I too was under the impression that if I didn't make $600 for one company I didn't have to claim it. And by the way, the IRS says $400 not $600 for a 1099.

As far as identity theft, the mystery shopping companies I've seen listed in this forum are reputable. I'm registered with about 130 of the companies mentioned in Jacob's list at the top of this thread and have not had a problem. And I've done about 300+ shops for several of the companies.
The companies usually want your bank account info so that they can pay you by direct deposit. Other companies use PayPal or send you a check. They want your SS # in case you make more than $599.99 per year, at which point they send you a 1099 form in January since you're considered an independent contractor for tax purposes. I'm guessing they probably will not give you a job until they have your info.

I have been registered with them for years but have never heard a peep. I have not even heard of anyone working for them since around 2005 or 2006.
I did find a generic sign up form so it appears that only if they have work in a MS location will a MS be contacted. Odd.

I am having trouble finding the "main page" for sassie so I can log into my account. I thought there was a central sign in page that will show me the MSC that I signed up with... or am I mistaken?
Today I noticed that the sassie login page(s) are not SSL/https. Does that mean the site is a front for a scam site?

I have recently signed up with 39 MSC who use Sassie. I did it by filling out one form and sycning it to all the accounts at once. Now I can go to one area and see all the Sassie logs, profiles, job boards, etc. It has made searching for jobs much more streamlined. I did this all through Jobslingerplus.com. I am not trying to tell anyone something they already know, but I thought this may help with the question you posted.

ARe there any listings that mention the better paying companies for our eyes, ears and fine reports we give about the customer service? I have worked for Best Mark and they seem to pay higher than other companies for our services. It amazes me how many companies wnat one to fill out extensive reports and then want to pay $2-10 for our services. In comparison BestMark pays $20 + service fee of company for an oil report and another company pays $5.00 for the report with no reimbursement for the oil change or a flat fee is paid by Confero $40 with no expenses paid.

One of my more generous companies IN MY MARKET is the brunt of jokes about their low pay IN OTHER MARKETS. The other markets do not have the same clients as are in my market. In my market BestMark is one of the low paying companies. Where you live and what you qualify for makes a world of difference.

Yes! I was so amazed when I saw someone had posted that Bestmark seems to pay more than other companies. In my market they pay very low. A couple of others that other posters complain about are my favorites. I think it's all about the region in which you shop.

$400 is the threshold for paying Self-Employment tax to the IRS and refers to the shopper's TOTAL self-employment income, not the amount made from any one mystery shopping company (or other source of self-employment income). The threshold for a 1099 to be issued is $600 from any single source of income (in other words if you get $600 or more from one mystery shopping company they'll send you a 1099 form).
