Is it too much to ask to get through a half hour of the Super Bowl or any disaster relief fundraiser without the constant PSA’s telling me what to think? The worst part about them is they make them mystifying - like what on earth are these images trying to convey- only to find out it’s about something irrelevant compared to the real issues we’re facing. There are billions of tons of plastics being tossed in the garbage every day and I’m supposed to care about making women’s flag football available in all 50 states? As it turns out that girl was on a harness making those jumps, so in addition it was entirely fake. How many times will Snoop Dogg be recycled as the hip, lovable personality to deliver these messages? Didn’t he get off on a technicality for a murder rap back in the early 90s? Why is this G’pa even relevant today?

The irony is they’re mixed in with the actual half-time show that didn’t have 1 while male in KL’s hype man crew. So there wasn’t ONE white male who could stay in lockstep with them? What message does that send? There were at least a couple dozen black people willing to be part of Up With People, why not show a little mercy and level the playing field? Are we THAT bad? There wasn’t any actual music involved which only diminished the mass appeal further. As a female, I’m not willing to get on my knees to sing. Why should that rule me out? Even I could have done a better job.

I’m still not following … what’s your point again??? It sounds like ‘devils advocate’ run amok. I didn’t say that it was KLs choice regarding his back up ‘dancers,’ but it was somebody’s choice! There’s been a pattern with the Super Bowl and award shows to turn them into rap/hip hop shows plus Taylor Swift - who isn’t worthy according to lampshade Ye.
It’s perfectly fine for him to show up with a naked woman who’s knobby knees and chicken legs are a joke. I’m guessing the rest is just as bad. He’s just as demented as Diddy. The people we raise up to celebrity status these days are mostly classless, talentless, uneducated, objectified, narcissistic drug addicts. I have zero interest in that culture and won’t be watching again.

This year's Super Bowl to me....felt as if someone had sucked the air out of a giant balloon.
It's gone flat....I remember for years and years, it was a huge, huge, huge event....and I won't argue that it's still a big deal, but it's gone flat in so many ways and not just the musical entertainment.
I also agree that it's gone the way of the award shows...flat, effete, uninspiring...look at the Oscars....I miss, great acting, so much rarer now as the industry relies on special effects, cartoonage, cheap sensationalism and all of that. The attempts to garner attention by pushing an envelope that's been pushed over the edge already....and has no more left to give.
Cheap and flashy without substance....attempting to sell products by appealing only to our most basic of instincts...ugh.
20th century novels....they were so prescient.
PS/I did enjoy the game! Go Eagles! and Eugene Levy's flying eyebrows were a little amusing.

Gold star post right here! I feel the same about the film industry. It was getting bad pre-writers strike but that killed any creativity that was left. The craze over the Barbie movie was proof of how far down the rabbit hole it’s gone. I used to go to the movies all of the time as well as most of my friends. Now there’s nothing, and the theaters are shutting down. There’s nothing that appeals to grown women anymore, who tend to like real life, human interest storylines.

I like to blame it on the millennials and Gen Z, but I know that’s not fair. It’s become pervasive with people of my age, bordering Baby B and Gen, X or older. They must have forgotten how much better things were before, or want to think they’re cool and fit in. I do blame the millennials who think that nurturing their kids equates to being helicopter parents instead of encouraging them to learn an instrument, socialize with kids in the neighborhood or explore whatever talents they do have with them. Those values weren’t passed on to them so they’re certainly not going to instill it in their kids. This leads to the mediocrity we’re seeing on all levels, imho.

Over the summer a group of millennial neighbors decided to have a ‘fun run’ get together. A kind of block party of sorts, but it was centered on their kids running around the block for some reason. I suspect it was in response to those of us who didn’t stay home to hand out candy to a few stragglers on Halloween, but I digress. I chose to spend my time in the back garden. Then all of a sudden I heard loud music blaring at a really obnoxious level. It was Queen’s We are the Champions. Then the super loud cheers of adults making a ruckus. Although thankfully the kids ‘fun run’ didn’t progress around the block, it was enough to send a message to the whole neighborhood. Their kids are really special. Congratulations on their slow jog to the finish line. Barf.

For the first time in my life I did not watch the Superbowl. I never even turned on the tv. I don't know who Kendrick Lamar is, and I'm pretty sure I don't care. I haven't been a fan of the halftime show since way back. I have deliberately changed the channel during the halftime show for many years. The last halftime show I remember was Prince. I know I watched Tom Petty, but I don't remember it. I do remember that I missed Janet Jackson baring her boobies on purpose, but I heard a LOT about it later. I found out on Monday who won the superbowl, even my very good friend that is an Eagles fan didn't tell me.

Kendrick Lamar fan here! I did watch and did enjoy the halftime show. I was just glad that he didn't sing Peekaboo. I do believe it would be difficult for someone who is not a fan or never heard of Kendrick to understand or appreciate his performance. Kendrick is a poet first and foremost. Think of it is as a lyrical poetry reading and not a half time show that we are accustomed to.

From all reports, the Super Bowl and half-time show set records for the most watched ever. I’ve been studying Kendrick Lamar’s work as I wasn’t all that familiar. The only performer I did know was Serena Williams. She was fun to watch and said she had a blast. As always, the Clydesdales were my favorite commercial.

I think it was Okie who might have mentioned that he has the prominence to perform at the SuperBowl, but there is a question of the seriousness of his work.
I invite social messages, appreciate social commentary and the like.....
but that's not what I tune into the SuperBowl for.

Morledzep ~ I’m with you. The first time I thought things went awry with the half-time show was with Michael Jackson. He suddenly appeared from out of the floor to start, and stood there for a long time in that usual stance he had with his arms by his sides and the puffed out chest. The applause stopped but he was still standing there in silence for an uncomfortable 20-30 more seconds before the music started. I guess they overestimated how long the crowd would go gaga over him. That’s all I remember about it. I’m pretty sure this was around the time he floated a ginormous statue of himself down the Thames. .
I’m ok with rap or even poetry but I don’t follow KL so I couldn’t decipher a word. I focused on the imagery in the hope there would be some break dancing at least. It had more of a militant vibe with a back up ‘army’ who’s faces were half hidden. It was kind of dark, so you didn’t miss much.

I thought the same thing about Lil Wayne. Im just glad that they did not feature Brittany B*T#h Spears!

Missed Prince’s performance. It probably topped them all. My favorite live performance of his was at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I imagine some of you have seen it. It’s all over YouTube even years after. He did a walk on guitar solo during a tribute to George Harrison. Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn, Steve Winwood and George’s son Dahni covered ‘While my guitar gently weeps.’ Everyone was blown away by how great Prince’s solo was.

Funny back story about it. The group wasn’t sure if Prince was going to show up for the one rehearsal they had scheduled for it because he was MIA prior. When he did, the plan was that Jeff Lynn’s back up guitarist would play an initial guitar solo, then Prince would do the second, ‘crescendo’ one. Nobody knew what that would sound like. When it came time for Prince to do it, Jeff Lynn’s goofy guitarist would jump in and take it. This happened more than once. Prince let him have it even though it was starting to irritate everyone. So he left without actually playing it.
During the stage performance the goofball did the first 2 solo’s, face contortions and all. Then Prince walked on and Dahni lit up, probably knowing Prince was going to kill it, which he did. Every so often Prince would look in the direction of goofball with a smirk or smile on his face, or he would mimic the goofy facial expressions while holding a note that would make Dahni LHAO. When he finished Prince tossed his guitar in the audience and walked off stage Kind of bitchy, but that was Prince.

Minime, Prince played Purple Rain in the rain at the halftime show. It was AWESOME. He kept most of his work off of YouTube until he died. It might be there now. Several of his videos are on YouTube now.

That performance at the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame was awesome by Prince. I think Jimi Hendrix would have bowed down to Prince.

That RHOF video remains one of my favorites of all time. Mesmerizing. It was later determined that the guitar was thrown to a guitar tech offscreen/offstage not seen.
Prince was one of a kind.
Tom Petty was one of a kind.
I miss them both immensely.
Recently, I happened to accidentally catch an interview on YouTube that Tom did with Conan O'Brian...
in it, they discuss opioids.

I found the video. Beyond awesome and total perfection. No lip syncing, played his guitar with little backup, the dancers, the love symbol stage, the marching band, the medley of songs …. He looked perfect even in the rain. What stupid football game?
