Movies

Well the gist of this thread is two-part.

1) Have there been any good movies recently in theaters?

2) Are they any old movie, documentary, TV recommendations you would make? Preferably ones available on DVD.

During the summer, I've been watching more movies in the theaters, but have movies really gotten that bad? Have there been any good ones that you've enjoyed? I know movies are highly subjective, and there are some theories why it's so bad now. At the bottom, is a list of the ones I've watched so far. I watched a variety of movies with family, friends, casual date night, myself. It started out decent during the spring, but then tanked during the summer. Especially the sequels. You didn't have to watch the previous movies, but it was just lackluster to me.

Also, I'm looking to cut a lot of streaming services that I let linger on. As I take a closer look at my spending, finances, and habits, I've determined I spend all of my time watching/listening to YouTube and Spotify. Pre-COVID, when I was super frugal, I used to visit the library and rent one movie, documentary, or TV season to watch once a week or over the course of weeks. I'm looking to do that again, as I recently visited my local library for the first time in five years. Have a list of some old ones I want to re-watch and some topics I want to research, but I'm curious if anyone has recommendations.

Spring
The First Omen
Monkey Man
Abigail (To me, surprisingly entertaining)

Summer
Challengers (Really bad)
The Fall Guy (Really bad)
The Garfield Movie (I knew this was going to be bad ahead of time, but it was a kids' event)
Bad Boys Ride or Die
Inside Out 2
Despicable Me 4
Twisters
Deadpool and Wolverine (Really bad)
It Ends with Us (The most decent one so far ... but like an extended episode of a long-running crime TV show, no offense)

Subjective indeed:

The Fall Guy Good

Bad Boys Ride or Die Good
Inside Out 2 Good
Despicable Me 4 O.K.

For two weekends DH and I talked about seeing Twisters but were never motivated enough.

I may have seen one or two more but can't even remember I only see movies in theaters
Okie, tubi (website/app) is free. I don't think you even need to sign up for an account to watch.

I'm also going to recommend a website/app called Reelgood. You tell it what services/channels you have access to, and it'll tell you what movies and shows are currently available, coming soon, and leaving soon. You can also search by title, and it'll show you where it can be watched.

I have my favorites and my "want to see" lists set up, and I receive an email when a title becomes available on my streaming services.

Oh wow, thanks doggie! I'll have to check out the Documentary section of tubi. Reelgood is a slick site. Good for ideas and recommendations too.

For me, the library route is also a way to limit my viewing. Especially with a TV series, if I get hooked, I will binge watch from evening until sunrise.

I kinda dropped out of going to movies when the pandemic stopped me from doing the trailer checks and opens. I haven't been back in a theater since then.

I think I would watch Deadpool and Wolverine just because I like the characters, and Ryan Reynolds is always funny.

I don't get a kick out of Pixar movies, and I wish Disney did their own animation still. I don't really know what's out in the theaters right now, the prospect of having to ride in my son's car in the heat keeps me at home any time I'm not working. I'm mostly ok with Prime Video, Paramount+, YouTube, and pausing Hulu for 12 weeks 3 times a year.
Mayor of Kingstown on Paramount +. Is really good. I've not watched the third season. Wanted to let it end and then binge watch it one weekend.

Also, you can get Paramount + for free with a Walmart + membership. And Walmart + is half price for college and grad students until 9/13.

I prefer FreeVee over Roku and Tubi. All free streaming services. It allows you to fast forward 6 or 10 seconds at a time. The others it just keeps going until you hit it a second time.
This summer, I enjoyed the remake of Presumed Innocent on Apple TV, even though it was somewhat formulaic - the acting was great and drew me in, I guess - I am a fan of the Gyllenhaals. I just cancelled the subscription - couldn't find enough on Apple TV to hold my attention there.
Thanks wrosie! I'll have to check out Mayor of Kingstown. That works out well. I get a Walmart+ membership credited back every month through a credit card. I'll look into FreeVee.
Thanks BarefootBliss! I'll have to plan to watch Presumed Innocent. I'm due for a new iPhone, and might wait until I purchase a new one for the extended Apple TV+ trial. The phone I currently have I believe I actually purchased five years ago right before my first mystery shop. It has gone through the wringer.

I highly recommend Palmer and The Banker on AppleTV+. They're both excellent movies.

Plex is another free app I really like.

With the Firestick with voice commands, I just hit the voice command and say the name of the movie I want. It will then pull up the movie and show all the different streaming services that show it or which you can rent/buy it (usually when they are still in theaters).
'Classic British Telly'

(Is this on Youtube or a category to browse in Tubi?) Anyway, you.might find and enjoy The Danedyke Mystery series, Lord Peter Wimsey, and other goodies.

Bach is not noise, Madam. (Robert, in Two's Company)
Not movies but "Heartland", "Mrs. Maisel" and "When Calls the Heart" are three highly rated series I enjoyed binging on.

Mulriple seasons should keep you entertained for at least a year.
Rosie, I'm having a lot of trouble trying to catch up on Heartland. I've managed season 14, and the first episode in 15. But I don't care for religious programming, so I will NOT give money to the "UP' network to stream the rest of the shows. I suffered through a free trial week so that I could watch season 14, but they wouldn't honor the free trial when it went to season 15 even though I had several days left. I'm going to end up paying for it on DVD, I just know it.

I should have waited on the last season of Mrs. Maisel. I watched all of it in one day and wanted more, they could have done 2 or 3 more seasons easily..
Yeah, I started having problems figuring out how I could watch more recent seasons of Heartland withoutpayng a subscription. But 14 seasons should keep someone busy for a while.

And I agree Mrs. Maisel could have gone into more seasons.

Both great shows.
It sounds like people want current productions rather than old ones. Alas.

People that like British "telly" would like "Coupling", it's like Friends with constant sexual innuendo.

Mrs. Brown's Boys is funny as hell and available on YouTube.

If you're a techie check out "The IT Crowd" for Internet in a box and turn it off and on.

I remember watching an episode of Coupling. That "Susan" was quite the attractive one.

I'll have to check out The IT Crowd. I liked Silicon Valley. Also, I would welcome anything similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Let's see, I've streamed all of MASH 3 or 4 times, all of NCIS more times than I can count, I've watched Longmire twice now, I'll probably do it again because I have a crush on one of the actors. I forced myself to watch all of House one time. I've watched all of all of the Star Trek series at least once, and most of them more than twice. The writers and actors strikes last year put a big fat wrench into my streaming habits. I'm finally getting close to the end of the Murdoch Mysteries. I had watched them all at one time, but then they kept making new ones and ABC made watching them on their website impossible. I found them on Hulu, but only seasons I had already watched. I finally found the rest of it, or at least most of the rest of it on Prime. I'm currently on Season 16. But Rings of Power is back, and the new tv season is going to start in a few weeks. So binge watching will take a backseat to football and current tv show streaming for a little while.
For Heartland, Reelgood shows the following:

FREE:
tubi - 14 seasons
Pluto - 14 seasons
Peacock - 15 seasons
Plex - 14 seasons
Freevee - 15 seasons
Crackle - 12 seasons
Roku - 15 seasons
CW - 15 seasons

SUBSCRIPTION:
Netflix - 16 seasons
Prime - 15 seasons
Hulu - 14 seasons
Fubo - 15 seasons
Hallmark Movies Now - 16 seasons
Dove - 10 seasons
Up - 17 seasons
Roku - 17 seasons

Just throwing it out there. I haven't verified anything - it doesn't look like a show I'd watch.

All eight seasons of McLeod's Daughters are available free on tubi, Pluto, Plex, and Roku. I made the mistake of watching ONE episode with my mother - it sucked me right in. Talk about twists and turns...

Internet Archive might be a resource for someone...

There is an app called cinema on fire TV and probably Roku too. It has a category of the top 100 movies of all time or something like that.

I've enjoyed lots of 30, 40 and 50 movies up to today's releases. They also sometimes have still in theater movies but YMMV.

I have a long list but usually after a few minutes in, I say "Bye!". @Wrosie, I thought my Mom and I would enjoy Mrs. Masiel. We watched 2 episodes tonight and loved it. Hooked!
Watched a late night showing of Strange Darling in theater with a friend driving through with his family and making a pit stop for the night. To me, I found it entertaining. It had a Quentin Tarantino feel to it and jumped around. It's nice if you're into a movie for just the outrageous scenes and graphicness. Other than that, not too much to the movie.
Was inspired by the June's Journey game to mention the oldie but goodie film 'Yellow Canary.' Is the bird in the hidden object scenes a reference to this movie? June worked as a nurse in WWI. Did this movie refer to WWII? Must find out right now... !

Watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice with a friend. I never watched the original or knew much about it. Got good towards the second half.

I lauv Jenna Ortega. So kyoot! Just wanna pinch those cheeks.

Also saw previews for Joker: Folie à Deux and Wicked with Ariana Grande. Something to look forward to!
I watched Arthur the King (needed tissues) and The Idea of Us (wasn't impressed). Ordinary Angels and something else will be tomorrow.

That's the one you said reminded you of me. Thanks, Doc! LOL
