Fantasy Football (or the like)

I'm curious if anyone actively plays in a fantasy football league? I know myself, and I am not going to do a league. It would get too intense, competitive, and mostly importantly time-consuming.

I'm thinking about joining a simple win/loss pick'em league, with no point spreads. It's one that I was invited to at a new job I will be starting after the upcoming holiday. A sizeable pot to make it interesting and have long-term vested interest. Weekly payouts and a grand long-term payout. The appeal is that as many people can join, like March Madness. I figure it would be good way to connect to people in a mostly remote environment.

Anyways for the NFL enthusiasts, what are some sleeper teams you think that will come out of the gate winning based on off-season moves, strength of schedule, division, etc.? I no longer follow this as intensely as I used to, so any general pointers are appreciated. (I try to stay away from biased and delusional Cowboys fans.) smiling smiley

No matter the sport, I have one rule I use to pick the teams:

The color of the uniforms.

If your path dictates you walk through hell, do it as though you own the place. -unknown

When in doubt, pick the home team!

I'm a pro football fan.. but I have NEVER played fantasy football, and I don't even know how to do it.
Is "football" french for "attractive women?" If so, that is certainly a fantasy I would participate in. grinning smiley

There is the truth.
Then there is the right thing to say.

In a nutshell, you take turns picking players during the initial draft. Each week, you go up against a different team/manager. Your team versus the other player's team. Scoring for each of your players is based on individual stats (yards, touchdowns). This is based on that player's performance in real life. Most of your team will be made up of offensive players. The team's total score will be the sum of each player's individual score. The team that has more points wins. You accumulate a win/loss record over the regular season. This is the most common format, head-to-head.

Overall, the biggest phases in managing your team are drafting, setting your rosters every week (making decisions on who to start/bench), and roster management (add/drop players, weekly waiver claims for top free agents, trades).

Every week, you play a line-up of eligible players at each required position. You can only start a certain number of players on your team, and then have to bench others. Some of these decisions can be based on match-ups in real-life, on how an individual player would perform against a team. Each week, some of your players may have a bye week or can be injured for a period of time.

You add/drop players with a free agent pool of undrafted players. When a player gets injured or even a season-ending injury, their back-up can be a hot commodity. You can also trade with other players/managers in the league. Every week, a team puts in waiver claims to acquire a free agent. There's a priority order in terms of which team gets first dibs at a free agent. How the priority list is determined can be different among each league. (It could be last team who picked in the draft gets to hang on to first dibs until that team uses it. Or the priority list resets every week, where the worst team up to that week, always gets first dibs.)

It sounds like a lot, but you get the hang of it quick.

The Las Vegas Review Journal used to have one of these with a very large payout at the end of the season. It used to cost nothing to join/play.

Just pick which team will win each game. The tie breaker was you needed to guess the final score and winner of the Monday night game.
