... is National Black Bear Day! Besides feeding or playing with a black bear, how could someone safely celebrate black bears?

Side story: We went there on vacation when I was little. There was a cub (and a watchful park ranger) by the side of the road, and many folks had stopped to watch. Signs were posted saying do not feed the bears. My dad...oy...decided the bear needed a honey bun, and he threw one at the bear....right in front of the park ranger. My mother was soooo mad at him for that. The ranger wrote him a ticket, which I believe was $25 (a lot of money back then.)

Yes to the donation. Just saw a blurb about an injured baby black bear who was rescued in Great Smokies. Yes to the cautionary tales about habituating the bears. Yes to ' Do not feed the bears.'

Royal Gorge about 60 miles due west of Colorado Springs is spectacular.

However the deer at the entrance have become so accustomed to handouts from visitors, they will butt you asking for food. And some of the males have full racks! (I didn't check if the females did).

You don't want to feed or play with black bears. Unless you want rabies.
