After lunch, I went to Wally World to pick a few items.. I had my own WM shopping bags with me.

When I approached the cashier, I put my items and my bags on the belt. The cashier rang up my items and she put them on top on my bag (and not inside).. I told her to please put them in this bag.. She said I (the cashier) can't do that.. You have to do bag your own stuff I just left the stuff on the counter and I took my money (she had not cash out yet-it was still on the counter) and I left. Good thing I did not have any cold stuff..

There was no sign what so ever that said that I can not use my bags and WM sells these reusable bags. When I got home, I called and asked for a manager and the employee said that they were in a meeting . Then I called the main office and I gave them all the information.. They said that it will be 1-3 business days before I hear something from them..

I have seen other customers bring their own bags to WM and other stores and other cashiers would put the items in their bag.


I just tried to call the store after I eat supper (which was about four hours after my first time) and there was no answer.

A couple of months ago I stopped in at Alberston's to get a few things because WM didn't have it.. I took my bags in and the cashier put it in my bag no problem.. You can also buy shopping bags at Alberston's



I can see during COVID, they did not allow this..

What do you think about this??

Sorry this has happened to you. And I wonder: Is this an instance of risk management, inadequate training, need for a policy clarification, or something else?

But I have heard that some WM,are going away with bags and you have to bring your own bags in..

I heard a rumor that sooner or later, Wal-Mart will phase out human cashiers. At that point, customers will be self-service at the register and possibly checking out on the app as they make their way through the stores. If the stores even exist... I am looking for more information. If this were true, what might be the benefits and unwanted effects? Will Wal-Mart then lower prices for customers because there will not be added remuneration for nonexistent cashiers? There is always a cost for grocery preparation services. How does this compare with the costs associated with getting to the store and completing most or all of the grocery task by oneself? Will any customers be paying more? Hmm. And, if anyone has an unexpected need to buy something at Wal-Mart, such as while traveling, will someone be tasked with assistance at the register? Will the person in need be forced to pay for the grocery preparation services for fulfillment, delivery, or pick-up service? What could work well or poorly then?

I bag my own stuff as the cashier is ringing. Expedites the process regardless of whether I bring my own bags or not. That being said, I try my hardest to avoid Walmart.

Good for you. I think I would have walked away too, unless I really had to have those items in a hurry. I'm guessing it was just that one cashier not understanding policy. The idea behind bringing your own bags is to reduce waste (and cost for the store,) and has nothing to do with who bags the items. If they bag it in their own bags, they should bag it in yours too.

I think each company sets up a policy regarding bagging. In my area every single store does NOT bag for you if you bring your own bags except TJ. They stand there and make you bag it yourself. It actually holds up the line because I don’t bag as well as they do and I won’t bag as they are ringing it up because I want to see the prices being rung up. I frequently catch mistakes especially if I am purchasing an on sale item frequently the registers have not programmed in the new lower price and I can’t catch it if I am busy packing. Needless to say I do the majority of my food shopping at TJ where they happily take your reusable bags (TJ or not) and efficiently bag them for you.

Just put the items in the bags??? Are you disabled? Was there a bagger that refused? Literally slowing down a line at already short staffed stores.

I am going to be the odd man out. I actually prefer to bag my own as it is easier to unload when I get home.

What is the difference in bagging in my WM bags and their WM bags? I did not needed the items at the time.

Several months ago, I went to this same WM and I had my own bags and the cashier put it in my WM bags no questions asked...

I guess the cashier yesterday did not understand policy but the cashier a few months ago did..

If this is not allowed there should be a sign saying this...

I prefer to bag my own even with the store bags. But the point of reusable bags is to reduce waste and pollution. If stores refuse to provide the same level of service to customers with reusable bags, it discourages their use.

Bag your own according to your own category, that is very smart. I should try that.

I do a lot of vendor work in Walmart's. I will be in them most of the week this week. I am going to ask a couple of my friends that work at WM and see what they say. I wonder if they will all answer the same way.

This is just my observations and no reflection on anyone here but have you seen the condition of some of these bags that customers bring in? Yuk. Gross.

I have some WM bags that i use all the time. They were blue.

I guess she does not like blue. I guess she prefers the gray ones.

I think expectations of anything remotely resembling competent customer service at WM to be unrealistic.

During the beginning of Covid the stores near me would not let me use my own bags; back then no one knew if the virus could be caught by touching a surface that might be contaminated. Then the policy changed to I could use my own bags as long as I placed the items in myself. Now most cashiers have no problem using my bags, although every once in a whole someone will say something.

My thoughts are, it's not that important. If they bag it fine, if they leave it for me- still fine.

Could this possibly be because of COVID cases increasing?

Also I thought Walmart was having issues with people shoplifting when doing self checkout.

Pre-pandemic, I used self-service lanes just to avoid having cashiers bag my goods. Now, I just do curbside -- so much easier. And WM allows one to specify, do not bag. I keep a large box in the trunk and they just toss the stuff in it. Nothing more annoying that having bags insufficiently filled.

It was my impression that shoplifters ideas of self-checkout is simply to walk out the door!

I guess I've gotten so used to so little showing of customer service by any business these days that nothing phases me anymore. Sad. I come from an era where they used to not only bag your items but also carry them to your car..omg.

Boo WalMart! One of the many other reasons I do not shop at Walmart ever!

I still want to know: is there some happy medium price point advantage, discount, or other financial advantage to consumers who use an app to check out, use the self-check registers, and/or use their own bags or boxes?

I love that back and legs now permit me to replace a cashier, bagger, and loader. However, it would be nice to get a price reduction for replacing three jobs. The lifetime cost of even one replaced employee, now reduced due to early retirement or other termination, and spread out across x number of consumer transactions while factoring in inflation and the [likely] few non-deductible expenses, should = some reduction in financial cost to consumers while maintaining profitability. Right? [We need ceasesmith and/or out math teachers to put this in correct terms.]

After a year of our plastic bag ban, I have seen some pretty rough-looking reusable shopping bags lately. They’ve got spills, stains, rips and tears.

If I were a cashier, I wouldn’t want to stick my hands into someone’s reusable bag. Who knows what was in it last - spoiled food, trash, a baby’s diaper?
