Squirrels

Anyone know of a good way to stop squirrels to stop digging in planters? Everytime I plant young plants in one of my planters the squirrels dig them up so they can bury their nuts. Someone in the neighborhood is feeding them peanuts as the shells are all over my yard. I have masking tape over the planters now to keep them out. Thank you.

Yes! Hot peppers! I used to mix dried crushed peppers into bird feed to keep the squirrels out of the bird feeder. Worked like a charm. Birds don't have taste buds like mammals so the capsaicin had no effect on them, but the squirrels would not come near.

get a have a heart to trap them >>>then move them very far away.. there will be more. I have 2 friends that catch and destroy them. I set up a rat trap out once with peanut butter. The trap went off and then squirrel was injured and never came back!! The squirrel had come up on my front porch and destroyed the hollyhocks I grew. That was too much for me.

How do you use hot peppers or cayenne pepper in planters?

Just crumble up the peppers and sprinkle on top of the dirt. If the seeds in the peppers sprout, pull them if you don't want to grow pepper plants.

What can you do for viney plants, like cukes, or tomatoes? Darned squirrels took my lone cucumber last year.

Surround them with chicken wire.

I had very good success last year with a product I found called Liquid Fence. Smells horrible (understatement) but it worked. Something ate the tops off the tomato and pepper plants before I discovered it. Fortunately it was early enough in the year that they grew back and produced fruit. I was careful not to spray the stuff on the fruit itself, just the leaves. Not that it would have harmed the fruit (it's all-natural) but I didn't want the stink on something I was going to eat - even though it would have been washed off before I ate it...lol

If hot peppers work, I'll go to Dollar Tree and buy red pepper flakes. I'm gonna mix some with the bird seed and see what is does. Every couple of years a really smart squirrel comes along and I've got one right now.

Cucumbers travel. I don't know how to contain the vines in chicken wire.

I have found that dogs will chase them off, but cats will catch and eat them.

I have had squirrel stew and it was good. I tried to shoot them with a bb gun. no luck.
