I was living in a hotel apartment in Marquette, Michigan, right on Lake Superior when the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost, with no survivors. I happened to be sharing my breakfast table with the wife of another Great Lakes seaman who was due to arrive, (via a different ship), later that day. She knew the wives of several of the men lost in that tragedy, as it often happened that wives traveled to meet their husband's ships where overnight port stops were planned.
