My son was an adult college student and purchased a marketplace plan. Unfortunately in the past few years (when they took away the penalty for not having coverage) the cost went up such that he couldn't afford it, and he spent his last year of school uninsured.

Fortunately, he got a job shortly after graduation that offered health benefits.

I don't understand how anyone in this day and age, especially if they are over 40, chooses to go without health insurance. Obamacare opened that door for so many people.

I was all dressed to go to the gym when I noticed that one of the cats had peed 'red' (as in bloody) in the litter box. Couldn't determine which of the two had the issue, so I called the vet to get them in today, adding that issue to what would have been tomorrow's blood work to check thyroid levels.

Turns out the gray-and-white has cystitis and his thyroid is overactive again. So now we're back to twice a day meds for that as well as four days worth of pain medicine for the bladder issue.

Yeah, burnt food stinks. Literally.
You know what stinks WORSE than burnt food???? A mouse that has DIED somewhere in the walls of your house!! Ever have that happen??? We have..........twice over 30 years. There's absolutely nothing you can do for a few days EXCEPT....keep a hot pan of water with cinnamon sticks on the stove so that the cinnamon aroma permeates the house for a few days....phew....it was AWFUL!!!!!
That must have been one hell of a big mouse/rat. We put out poison because our traps were catching some, but we knew we didn't catch them all. And then the poison kept disappearing at an alarming rate. I have no idea where those suckers have crawled off and died...I am guessing somewhere down in the basement. Or, maybe over on my son's side of the house...he has a rather large separate living space from us and he would probably never notice. He would just think it was the garbage he never takes out or dirty dishes, which probably explains why we got those critters to begin with!
Oh no, that's awful. I had a cat who died because he had a bad UTI. It happens mostly in male neuters, from what the vet said. After that I was careful to make sure to include Taurine in the diet of my remaning cats. After the last one died (over 20 years ago), I haven't had another cat since. I miss my kitties, they were so sweet.

The vet didn't mention taurine. How did you give it to your cat? What dose?

Lots of work with a much-needed mani/padi interlude.

Strange thing happened yesterday, can't stop thinking about it. I go to Ross to return an item and the cashier always says hi as I enter, and talks to me while purchasing, she likes my taste and comments...yesterday, she tell me her legs hurt so much from standing all day and they can't have a stool, she gets minimum wage and is thinking of returning to Iran due to high rents and cost of living. Seems I want to help her and figuring out how.

Will be home for awhile doing paper work and taking care of business stuff, including cleaning.

Haha, like on the Looney Tunes cartoon, right? Actually, my husband owned his own pest control company till he sold it in 2007. At the time in the distant past when we had the issue of the dead "whatever" (haha), he said he had experience in customers homes where a small mouse that had died in the walls had stunk up the house like that. Some homeowner had the wall opened up and that's what it was.

We have lots of woods beyond our fence in the back yard, and over the years we have caught several mice in the house, till we figure how they're getting in and then plug up whatever tiny hole they're using. But we've never seen or caught a rat, thank goodness!! So yeah, we figure it was a mouse that died in our walls.

ETA: Come to think of it, maybe it was a squirrel....we have tons of those, too!!

Irene, you are a sweetie!

You have mentioned one of my biggest 'GAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!' peeves. imho and based upon personal painful experience and feedback from other people, it is often possible and always an extremely good idea to permit some workers to have chairs, stools, mats, etc. so that their jobs do not make them sick and/or sore. It is a reasonable accommodation for some workers and a sensible precaution for others.

I 'had" major numbness in the bottom of my feet due to nerves dying and know the pain, but I could sit down and soak my feet. My visit to the foot Doc helped, telling me to wear a diabetic socks in the house and not going barefoot. Soaking in Epson salt also helps.....tomorrow I'm bring her a pair of these special socks and passing on my info. Salesgirls can at least walk around, but the cashier stands in one place for 8 hours, I think that's cruelty.

Today I am organizing some projects for the cooler days, such as crochet hooks and yarn to make some throws. I'm also putting together a basket of quilt supplies to set beside my lounger so that I can work on a long-delayed quilt project. Also doing a couple of phone call shops.
I dropped my phone face down in a parking lot. Of course, today was raining. I put it in a bowl of rice for an hour or so. I go to plug in the charger and there is a grain of rice stuck in there.

Thank goodness for the wireless charger. I am going to try a toothpick next.

Toothpick schoothpick. Why, exactly, was there a grain of rice stuck there?!

Bach is not noise, Madam. (Robert, in Two's Company)
Oh Honny, so sorry that happened to you!! Hopefully you can get that grain of rice out and see if the rest of the rice worked in absorbing the moisture from your phone....keeping fingers crossed for you!!
I wirelessly charged it to 100% and it seems to work fine. I haven't done a full test of every feature.

SEL, I poured rice over and under the phone and swished it around. Not once did I consider the fact that rice would go where it shouldn't!

ETA: I found toothpicks! Well, not quite toothpicks, but the plastic skewers that go though martini olives.

Had a day off yesterday. Mended some clothes. looked for weekend shops, did one quick shop, gathered one egg, went through clothes for thrift shop. My brother and a friend cleaned my bedroom floor and moved furniture to accommodate a nice dresser my daughter gave me.
CA law requires that a stool be available for any cashier that requests it.

I calculated that could triple my income consistently (from two job types) if I could use my own comfy chair between interactions, stand on my own mat as often as possible, and not need body care between gigs.

She put her phone into rice to draw out moisture. It's a small opening, and a grain of rice can easily get stuck.

An egg?

I used the plastic skewer to smash the grain of rice since I could not pull it out. It takes a few minutes to recognize the wire charger, but otherwise is fine.

I did a hardware store shop today. I asked what veggies I can plant this time of year.

Kale!

When I had this role, I found that people had the right equipment, but used them incorrectly.

My experience with "Crock-Pot" brand slow cookers confirms what Consumer Reports has published repeatedly. They all over heat so that, even on the low setting, food will boil actively, instead of simmering. They rate, less expensive Hamilton Beech (Hcool smiley and other slow cookers well above Crock Pot. I have, or have had, very size of HB slow cookers and find them much more reliable when it comers to actually maintaining a simmer, and not boiling the heck out of the food.

For chili, I use a cast iron (enameled) braising pot. Brown the meat, remove it to drain excess fa, add onions to the pot for a couple of minutes. Then add all ingredients, including the meat, cover, and place in oven, set to 200 F for about 6-8 hours. This works best if your pot had a heavy/tight lid, so that vapor does not escape and nothing burns. btw, this was the method many used for stews and soups for eons before there were electric slow cooking gadgets. For great stew, browning the meat is not essential, so everything but the potatoes can go into the pot at the start, with the potatoes added for just about the last hour. Peg Bracken's, "I Hate to Cook," book called her version of this stew, "Stay Abed Stew." Assemble in the morning; add potatoes 1 hour before serving, go back to be to nurse your head cold in between. In the 1960s I learned a whole new way of cooking from that book, so survived being a wife and full time student with 2 part-time jobs, and we still ate well.
