Yesterday I got the huge box open and determined that the item is an acid red mountain bike, but only worth about $400. And, after 4 days of emailing and leaving voice mail I finally heard back from the on-line store that sent it to me. After many questions back and forth, it was confirmed that, yes, they did send it. Yes, someone must have paid them via PayPal (the only form of payment that they accept), and yes it was NOT my PP account that was charged.
Now here is my dilemma: they have gotten paid for this and I have it. They propose that I send it back and would pay the freight. However, they do not appear to have any idea who actually ordered the bike and no one has complained of not receiving one that was ordered. If I return it, they can sell it again. If I keep it, no one appears to have suffered a loss.
The seller's rep told me that he thinks that this is a scam gone awry. They had a similar case about 6 weeks ago. The speculation seems to be that a hacker got far enough into my Ebay account to order it in my name but not to charge my PP account. (Okay, I do not understand that, but the seller apparently does.) I did recently list something on Ebay, about 2 weeks ago, btw.
Should I insist that the seller find the original buyer, in case that person is NOT a scammer who screwed up, and return their $400 payment before I return the bike? If they cannot do that, should I return the bike (at their shipping cost), sell the bike (I cannot use it, that's for sure.), or what. The seller is a fast-growing dealer in new and used and even vintage bikes, based in the greater SF Bay area.
Meanwhile, I am about to change a whole bunch of access codes!
