JAS, we had a priest at church that told us that if we don't eat meat, we should then give up whatever we normally like eating and eat meat instead. So, if I were a vegetarian, I would not be denying myself if I did not eat meat, which is the purpose of the Abstinence during Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and Lent.
So, there was a time when I was not really eating any kind of meat and when Fasting and Abstinence came, I observed fasting, denied myself fish and the use of the Internet. I know with Fasting, I never have any appetite anyway. But giving up Internet!!!
It's a self-sacrifice. Giving up something... When one indulge in seafood instead, that's not really sacrificing something, unless they do not like seafood, according to my priest, but they did abstain and did not eat meat. But who are we judge?
My son hates seafood and if he eats seafood, he would definitely be sacrificing and observing Abstinence, but there are other meatless food available, why would he bother?
