What are you doing today? (besides shopping)

All this talk of fruit and cobblers and tarts and things has inspired me... I pondered awhile and remembered grandma's fabulous cobblers, my pretty good version of them, something about plums, pastry, & frozen, and the internet. And the NYT had this:

Recipe: Original Plum Torte

Total time: 1 hour 15 minutes

3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 cup unbleached flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
2 eggs
24 halves pitted purple plums
Sugar and cinnamon for topping.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Cream sugar and butter in a bowl. Add flour, baking powder, salt and eggs, and beat well.

3. Spoon the batter into a spring form of 8, 9 or 10 inches. Place the plum halves skin side up on top of the batter. Sprinkle lightly with sugar, depending on the sweetness of the fruit. Sprinkle with about 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, or to taste.

4. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Remove and cool; refrigerate or freeze if desired (but first, double-wrap the tortes in foil, place in a plastic bag, and seal). Or cool to lukewarm, and serve.

5. To serve a torte that has been frozen, defrost and reheat it briefly at 300 degrees.

Yield: 8 servings.

I tried to link to the newspaper's site, but that didn't work. Anyway, now I just have to join the cobbler-tart gang. Next week, I can bake something yummy. smiling smiley

Thanks Irene, but it was my close friend April's younger sister Tracy. She was way too young to pass and left behind two young children, 7 and 9 years old. We just got back from having dinner with April and her husband after the calling hours and service, the kids were inconsolable throughout the entire service and it was heartwrenching, mostly because of listening to them cry for their mom. Plus of course the parents losing a child, so sad. Not like April wasn't torn up about it too, but she was much stronger through it then the rest of her family. And my friend April's little boy was also crying alot and clinging to his mom and he is afraid since Aunt Tracy was younger than April that April could die too...how to explain things to children when we don't have the answers ourselves.
That torte sounds yummy. I might make it if I ever get the chance to harvest some plums. I went to Kroger to get the cobblers (Sara Lee) and they apparently stopped carrying them. I did, however, spot some strawberry rhubarb pies so I bought two of those to take. How can I go on without blackberry cobbler? It's a summer tradition, warm out of the oven with vanilla ice cream. I even planted blackberries in my backyard but they won't produce this year as I cut them back last fall.
Before giving up trans fats a long time ago, my go to decadent treat was Marie Callender's blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. The nutrition facts claim it has no trans fats which just means there are few enough per serving for them to be able to claim zero. The cobblers are so small two of us would finish off one. To beat the FDA the label claims there are eight servings which be about two tablespoons per personsmiling smiley

My sister's daughter-in-law passed away at 44 from Cancer leaving a 9 year old. My nephew raised her alone,
great tragedy, however, she is now 34 and a nice girl. My nephew was strong and did his best, they are very close to this day, my nephew and his daughter, she would never leave her Dad and gave up a Scholarship to Berkley Univ. and choose to attend UC Santa Cruz where her parents both went and married.

That sounds about right. I usually have one serving of blackberry cobbler a year. I'm a little bit of a healthy whole foods fanatic but I do allow myself something decadent from time to time. Tacos are my biggest exception to the healthy rule due to the carbs and fried shells, other than getting paid to eat burgers. I mostly just taste them and then throw them out.

The older I get, the more I like sweets. I remember my mom was the same way and I used to give her a little grief for eating so very little at dinner but eating desserts so often. I don't eat sweets every day, but I like a piece of chocolate about once a week and ice cream in the summer a few times a week. In the winter, not so much. I wonder why it's a seasonal thing?
Interesting about the sweets and your family. Today, I am reading about foods and products that might reduce the craving for sweets. You did not mention craving. There is a bit about human tastes changing over the life span. No one has discussed (yet) whether it is important to steer all aging humans away from sweets. In the past, some doctors thought it was cruel to deny sweets to people who had little else and were not diabetic. I don't know (yet) what the thinking is now.

I belong to several organizations and after mass we had to complete some apostolic work. Now I have just completed my preparation for 3 shops, which included passing a test and reading the Guidelines. I am setting up the ingredients for peanut butter cookies before I go out to complete those shops. After the reports, I will be baking some batches.
I'm going to see Tom Petty along with Stevie Knicks and the Lumineers.

Enjoying the break in the heat and humidity by walking near where I will park for several garage shops. Relishing the last low traffic day of the Congressional recess in DC.

Based in MD, near DC
Shopping from the Carolinas to New York
Have video cam; will travel

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
We went to a bar on the lake and had beers and food with my husband's cousin and his wife, then went to a party at another cousin's house. Today, housework and laundry. Also have to pack some boxes for post office shops.
This is genius. It would never occur to me to set the ingredients up before going out. Normally I plan to make something when I get home and then when I get home I don't feel like cooking that much. If everything is already sitting out, I kind of have to!

We had a lovely day at the reunion. I'm not sure what I"m doing besides shopping today as I have a large day route planned.
I don't where I would be without my mise en place. Doing it before leaving for the day never crossed my mind and it is brilliant.

Bgriffin, enjoy the show. I have to say in all my years of concert going, the single worst show I ever saw was Stevie Nicks. It was a shame because I love her music.

I'm sorry. winking smiley

Tom Petty is ok but I'm honestly not a huge fan. Will enjoy the show though. Lumineers just killed though.

Thanks! The worst I've ever seen was Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr*. And that's saying something cause I've seen close to 1000 bands. As long as she does Landslide and the comes back out and does Outsider with Tom I'm happy. Other than that I'll probably ignore her.

*Possibly Lance Herbstrong was worse

I never had a sweet tooth, hardly ate candy, now, I love my dark chocolate and all time favorite hard chocolate on frozen banana's. Having aged, I'm told to watch my sugar #'s, so my danish at Whole foods day is over. The banana/chocolate tip works, but I miss my ice creme and pastry...would rather be healthy than old and sick...
When in Vegas with that chocolate store in Casaers, well, I'll never tell, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Yes, I think it would be good with some vodka to cut the sweetness, like frozen white Russians?
