TXRH Dine In Requirement Changes

i think i saw subject line with no salad or something. i don't care. i like the salad anyways. you get the filet medallions, you get 3 sides, so one of them can be a side salad.

Update: Chili has been removed from the appetizer menu at my location. They have added deviled eggs.

I feel like this is slowly becoming a Five Guys Shop where the only time your meal will be completely covered is if you order literally the cheapest thing on the menu.
The appetizer menu varies with location. I went to a location last week that had did not have the eggs or the Twisted Mozzarella, but it did have chili.
I have never seen Twisted Mozzarella on their menu, but that would be a nice addition.

At my location they have Chili as an appetizer but they don't have the Twisted Mozzarella sticks or the eggs.

I forget where I read it, but I think I saw a article a few days ago they were making some changes to the menu at the TRH
You can always ask for an extra side of chili as an appetizer and pay for it on top of your meal.
This still strikes me as doable as I almost always am solo at the bar when I shop.

I usually go Road Kill for the entree, with chili and salad as my sides. With chili qualifying as an app I could get one other side and still be under reimbursement.

I have never heard of ordering chili (which is a side) as an appetizer. Can any side be ordered as an appetizer? It seems like if they want timing on appetizers, they would require an item off of the appetizer menu. Im not doubting that you have done this, I just want to make sure that the shop does not get rejected.

I suppose it's still doable especially as a solo shopper but maybe I'm just salty that the reimbursement hasn't changed since I started doing these shops 6 years ago yet the menu prices keep going up. Just like Five Guys, I don't go there to order a hot dog. Same with TRH, I don't go there to order a sandwich.

I just took this screenshot of a location that currently has the eggs, Twisted Mozzarella, and chili on the appetizer menu.

Chili was listed as an appetizer in the appetizer section so it would qualify, but apparently different locations have different menus now. I would only order things that are listed in the appetizer section as the appetizer.

Their chili is phenomenal. I take my own jalapenos with me. Not about to spend $3 on their grilled jalapeno. I bring my jalapeno and cut it up and place it in the chili. They give you the red onions and cheese at no extra cost. They charge for the jalapeno. I did find out you can add pickles and onions to the side salad at no extra cost. I liked that too.

reimbursement was $25 for bar shops and $35 for dining room in 2021

Even if you order chili as a regular side, they will often ask if you want it now instead of with your meal. In some cases I've had them deliver it as an appetizer without even asking. FYI it's still listed as a starter on the TXRH website, at least for locations in my area (central Ohio). If you don't see it on the paper menu, check the website. You may find it's still listed as a "starter" there. But I don't see other sides listed as an appetizer, so I wouldn't suggest trying just any side.
I looked and the chili is indeed listed as a starter! I would have never thought of chili as an appetizer! Who knew!
Related tip -- Get the bowl (not cup) of chili as your appetizer and a salad for one of your sides. These items plus bread mean you will likely fill up quickly and have more leftovers to take home. Also, they don't charge extra if you want some sour cream to go with your chili. Yummy!

I can live with that. Deviled eggs are always ordered if available.

And, having grown up I Texas, I'd like to give props to TXRH's chili. It's the real deal given the chain's name: no frickin' beans!

I usually get the Road Kill also smiling smiley
I was okay that this shop didn't pay, since the meal was covered. Now, it still doesn't pay and we are out of pocket unless we order the cheapest items on the menu. They should increase the reimbursement if they are adding to the ordering requirements.
Beans also varies by location. Some locations do have beans in the chili. In the screenshot I posted earlier in this thread, you can see the beans.

It is a lot of food, especially if you eat the delicious bread. My daughter and I go together and we share a bone in rib-eye. Between the bread, the appetizer (we either get the sampler or the skins), the sides and the steak, we both eat well! And.. I always take bread to go for my son. Usually our out of pocket is mainly the tip, even with the new requirement. Now, if I take my son, he won't share with me which is why he doesn't get to go as often!!!
The report is so easy, though, I still think it's a great deal for $50 off a good, filling meal.

The Texas Red Chili cup for $3.99 (bowl $4.99) are listed under the "Just for Starters" category, so it counts as an appetizer.

When I do the “sit-down” shop, I take a family member with me and look on the payment as a discount on a good meal.
When I do the bar shop, however, I go alone and, with no fee, I want to have nice meal and have it paid for. With the added requirement of an appetizer, the cost of the meal with a good steak is now above the reimbursement, and I don’t like going OOP for a no-fee solitary meal.
It’s fine that they want the additional item, but add an additional reimbursement to cover the extra cost.
The other thing is you look crazy sitting alone at the bar ordering an appetizer and a steak. It’s way too much food, so I have to say my family wants me to bring the rest of it home. I imagine that the bartender can always figure you for a shopper.
The guidelines still show the side salad as required. Any issues yet? I want to order a salad entree and have my spouse order his usual dinner, but he doesn't like the side salads. Thoughts?

@ShopperGirly

Why did you post 2x about 2 hours 44 minutes apart?

You can do the shop correctly and not worry about it. Or you can do it the way you want and risk them finding out. That is up to you.

I get a side salad every time even before this requirement, so it doesn't bother me. But I can understand wasting a side salad when you are ordering an ENTREE salad. Problem is, they want to know timing on the salad. That is the point of ordering side salad.

I'm not sure what kind of advice you are seeking. You tell your husband that you either have to purchase an additional side salad (and maybe go over reimbursement) or that can be one of his sides or you change your order to be something with sides instead of an entree salad. I guess the 4th option is to go by yourself and order a side salad and appetizer first. Then order your entree salad and you won't have to worry about going over reimbursement.
