Counter-offer

How do you submit a counter-offer? When I see a shop I'd like to do but the pay is low, all I see is a place to apply.

Depends on the MSC. You can try emailing the scheduler for the job.
Yes, but most of the time when a new shop is announced, there is not a scheduler listed. In that case, how can you find out who the scheduler is?

I have heard tales of shoppers striking deals, but I think it is rare and only with specific companies. I have tried a couple of times when shops were languishing for a long time, but either got no response at all or a hard no from the scheduler. They have their own protocols and offer bonuses on their own schedules. But if you do have any success please come back and share. If you share the company you are talking about you will get a better response.

IPSOS is usually the only MSC not to list a scheduler as they moved to a self-scheduling model a while ago. If you are asking about IPSOS, they will add bonuses when/if they really need something completed to meet a deadline. Likely pointless to ask them for a different fee on a job just announced, they will not entertain it (and unlikely to even respond)

Are you signed up for emails with that MSC? If so, the scheduler is usually the one that sends out the email about shops in your area. Also if it is a new shop, not likely to strike a deal. They will wait until someone unsuspecting comes along and takes it at the low fee. Only after the job not moving, may they consider an increased fee.
I have attempted to request bonuses on shops that I can do while I'm in the area. One was a grocery store that regularly got bonused and was going to be bonused less than 2 days later. I was in the city, and I emailed the scheduler, only to receive a resounding, "no thanks." I said (to myself, of course) ok, no skin off my nose, I can drive home the short way instead of going around the long way to go to the store. Right on schedule, the shops was bonused for the amount I requested 2 days later. And then it went to double that amount, but still no one did it. The round ended, the shop never got done. I think they offered the shop at that store again one or two more times, but they don't offer it anymore. The other stores in that chain are still being shopped in other areas, just not the one that's only 40 minutes from me.
I negotiate fees/travel compensation. I thought most of us did? Not all MSCs are open to that, but you learn over time.

I never submit a counter offer? I don't have time for that. If the pay is too low, then I just pass and let an elephant have it (elephant definition: someone who works for peanuts). If I ask or am asked to shop an out-of-town route, I submit a fee that I consider fair and the least amount that I would do the job for. I neither price-gouge or accept low balls. I am a full-time shopper and have plenty of work.
