Do you like working here?

Picked up a new shop and I am supposed to ask an employee something along the lines of "do you like working here" to gauge enthusiasm. Any recommendations to make it not seem so awkward?

I used to work in a place like this, how do you like it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That depends. Is it the only thing you have to ask them, or is there an extended conversation involved?

If you're talking about a bunch of things I could see slipping that in no problem. Especially if they introduce themselves.

If I had to force it into a very short interaction, I would probably ask how their day is going (which is standard small talk) and then ask your question as if it's your reaction to what they said. That way it seems like they prompted the question and not like you came in to ask it.
Depending on what kind of business, I was thinking about applying or my child needs a job and wants to apply. What do you think about working here?
I remember several years ago my wife helped me do a coffee shop that was located inside a book store.

One of the questions on the report that we had to ask the cashier " Do you like working here" or something to that degree

I was thinking about a similar shop recently when I passed by a location. I believe it's the same one. So peaceful!

I remember there was an additional shop with a dine-in element for selection locations.
I know what shop this is. I feel bad for the business paying for the information. Just yes/no on the shop report. No explanations. I feel the business is wasting their money on this information as it is not useful and no explanations required for the answers/scores given.

Shop is easy and I would do it again.
"Excuse me, like you, I'm on a job that I don't really like or want to have to do, but also like you, I need the money, so help a brother/sister out. Please try not to stare at me awkwardly while I ask you a question I'm supposed to ask, and hint, your answer is going into a report, so try to fake liking your job, even though I know it sucks. You never know, maybe you'll get a Christmas bonus. *half smile* Who the hell are we kidding? You're not getting any bonus. *big toothy smile* Do you like working here?"

There is the truth.
Then there is the right thing to say.
