I have said, "Oh thats funny, I would probably be a good one!" The place I work full time now used to have mystery shoppers and I actually shopped my exact location. I chuckle on the inside when my supervisor mentions how we used to get shopped and some of the comments the shoppers made. I want to scream, "I KNOW, I KNOW!"
Me? No, I am not in the least mysterious. Who would think an old heavy set lady would be mysterious?

It happened once. I said, "I don't think I am mysterious at all. Why do you think I am mysterious?" They got embarrassed and apologized.

The one time it did happen I said, "What, like I am the millionth customer or something?....did I win anything?", and acted a little excited and confused. They let it go quickly!
" Whaaat? Who is Miss Terry?"

The one time a banker insinuated I was mystery shopping her I had truly forgotten about talking with her a few months prior.
No acting needed as I denied her accusations. Later I remembered her and have never returned to that location.
I have been called out but after the shop. It was a place I liked shopping and the manager saw me there again and said how nice it is when the mystery shopper becomes a customer. I was mortified. I was also with my better half and thinking how rude it is to say it aloud and then also say it in front of someone else. I was really irked about it at the time.

I also thought it was sort of funny and naive of the manager to assume I was never a customer. I won't be shopping that location any time soon. Although it would be funny to just keep going regularly and freak them out.
Can you look it up with my phone number? And if they try to clarify just act like you didn't understand and say no thank you.

I never really understand what would be in it for them to have a gotcha. If you think you know, why wouldn't you just be over the top perfect with your actions and words?

There was a pizza chain that delighted in identifying and then reporting shoppers. Why was and remains a mystery to me (pun intended). Why not simply provide excellent service and get a great report?

I've never understood companies outing shoppers. I agree with you; they could be benefited if they knew who the shopper was.

I think it sometimes depends on the employee, and if they already know they made a bad impression or are going to get docked. Some of the places with lower turnover and higher retention rates, the manager or longer tenured employees will see the long-game and aren't as short-sighted.
I had that happen during a thrift store shop. The poor girl was so nervous, I thought she was going to faint.

I look mysterious, why are you commenting on my appearance. I think it's best if we move on, right?
