More deaths & illness linked to Boar's Head deli meat/Listeria

I read on Nextdoor app in my area where someone took a bunch of discarded packages of Boar's Head meat while dumpster diving, and was trying to sell them on the street.

My son does dumpster diving, but he sells almost nothing from it, though he talks about it sometimes. We already talked about selling food items, it won't happen. He can give it away to folks in need, or he can feed it to the chickens. Some things I eat too.

I keep hearing "boars head" and not hearing "liverwurst." It is not the roasted sliced meat that is NOT made in the VA plant that is the problem. I hear the same @#$%& on the news too, "boars head" as a brand rather than the specific product and the plant that it was made at that are the actual problem. It's almost like someone is trying to put boars head out of business on purpose.

Boars head cleaned up their mess, they closed the VA plant where the listeria came from. I don't know if they make liverwurst in another facility, but if they do, it is likely ok to eat it.

And finding food in a dumpster does not make it bad. We stopped getting food from food banks because they were giving us out of date and stale food. We find fresher food, still inside the "best by" date, and often still frozen or still cold from refrigeration in grocery store dumpsters.
I'm one of those who believes everyone of course decides for themselves, but I think the facts are clear.
They began receiving health citations for two years before they actually started to take any action....so basically, no actions until people got sick and died.

Personally, I'm grossed out knowing I ate some of their products earlier this year. Again, everybody has a different hurl level.
Meanwhile, they're more worried about whether the grocers have cleaned their slicing machines? It screams of irony and misplaced priorities IMO.
No one has to try to put BH out of business, they're doing a good job of that all on their own.

Hmm..so it's probably fine that I typically eat wraps from Boars Head from the deli in my local grocery store for lunch......rrriiiiiiggggght?
Love it or hate it I guess. I LOVE liver. It is one of the most nutrient dense foods you can eat.
Used to be a big on beef liver but have since found that chicken liver is much more delicate and easy to cook.
My pets get small amounts in their food when I have cooked a batch.
My dogs get their meds in "dog cheese" (regular american cheese, NOT Kraft singles) and thin sliced lunch meats. My dogs eat raw meat, bones and organs as their regular meals. The older folks don't even know what dog treats are, nor are they interested in "cookies." The puppies, and Ms. Rita like to try anything, but they mostly take "cookies" out of politeness, and then put them on the floor and walk away. Rita likes the banana and blueberry dog treats from Ambassadog Barkery by Ty and Hails. I buy the mini dog treats in 1 lb bulk bags and a bag lasts about a year. (Ms. Rita is a giant livestock guardian dog).

I like liverwurst, but I'm not interested in higher priced supposedly "high end" liverwurst, I'm perfectly happy with plain old Oscar Mayer slices with the plastic bands on the plastic cards in the self serve deli. A slice on Rye with mustard, dill pickles and tomatoes is a wonderful treat once or twice a year.

Cleanliness of the slicing machines shouldn't be a factor in the listeria problem. The service deli folks are instructed to NOT cut liverwurst on the slicers. I've been told that by both Kroger deli associates and Publix associates. I'm sure the slicer cleanliness is a completely separate issue.

My son isn't going to stop doing Boars Head shops as long as the MSC keeps offering them.

I think I'll give this a try sometime, to indulge every once a while.
I love chicken livers! They smell and taste wonderful cooked on a charcoal BBQ, and have a creamy texture if you grill them just right.

I miss the good ole' days when chicken livers were dirt cheap.

there's a farm not far from here that sells beef liver from the cattle they raise and butcher there...
I've used it to make liver pate...so yummy, so rich, small quantities or wow, overload lol.
It was more popular in the 80s/90s, but I was too young and stupid to enjoy it.
As a NYer, chopped liver is a part of nearly every deli, so it's common and yummy too.
I find they are still pretty cheap, given the amount of protein you are getting I would say dirt cheap.

A 1 lb container of frozen is about 1.65 at most of my local grocers (when it isn't sold out) and that goes a LONG way.

I have overdosed on it a few times and finally figured out what that odd, metallic taste is that you get from eating too many. It is the iron, literally metal, therefore the metallic aftertaste. I don't get that if I only eat a couple.

I drain well (the blood is kinda gross) then saute in butter for just a few minutes (want the inside to stay pink), cool down then wrap in a slice of bacon (cut in half - too big otherwise) then pop those in the air fryer on 400 for about 5-8 min or until SUPER crispy.

The dogs / cats get the leftovers.

some recommend soaking it raw in milk or vinegar before cooking in order to reduce the flavor of all those vitamins and minerals....it's right up there with shellfish, some of the most nutrient dense food.
Thanks! Hm, I'm going to give it a try over the weekend maybe in a bone broth or stew. I found some YouTube videos on it. Maybe throw in carrots, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, jalapenos. Well at this point, throw in some shrimp, tomatoes, peppers, and maybe make it like a gumbo.
