Rant #2

While interviewing the owner of a grocery store, he told me about a warning he gives to his employees. If you see a person with a large item in the bottom of a cart and 3 or4 small items valued at about $10.00 there is a very good chance that they are a mystery shopper. This statement came to roost. I was shopping a major store and as I checked out the cashier said to the bagger to please remove thr case of soda from the shoppers cart. I have been called a customer and other things but never a shopper. ??????

Why were you interviewing him? Just curious.

Many stores have sensors installed down low in each lane; they alert the cashiers if there are items stowed beneath the carts.

As a shopper, I hate that scenario, anyway - it really IS painfully obvious. I rarely see people put items in the under-cart area of carts. I know I normally don't. It's easier to get larger/heavier things out of the cart than it is to have to stoop way down to get them.
Oh the mysterys of mystery shopping BUT I am learning. This shop was a double. First you do a mystery shop than you introduce yourself to the manager and do a really in depth survey of the store. This can really open some eyes.
Done the shop you're referring to many times. Generally my under-cart item is some type of beverage, so I just hit the soda/water aisle very last, and go immediately to the checkouts. Much less obvious, plus less weight to lug around the store.
When I was laid up I did grocery shops in an electric cart and put items down by my feet (milk, sodas, etc.) Can't tell you how many free gallons of milk I could have had. I went back each time and paid for the milk though.

Got milk? yesssssssssssssssssss
I usually put detergent of some kind at the bottom of the cart. Also, I rarely only buy 3 or 4 other items. I HATE putting something on the bottom, but I've gotten it down to a science.

I always leave coupons in the cart. After I hear the total, I reach to get my coupons and "notice" the item under my cart as well. The MSC is happy because the item (if missed) is AFTER coupons, which clearly shows that it was missed. I just have to make sure that I have a coupon for something in my cart...which usually isn't a difficult thing for me to do smiling smiley
