How about a chat function, like Facebook chat...? It seems like a pretty tall order but would be so much easier for private conversations than endless PM's.

Nice idea. I have seen it on other sites. But unlike Facebook style it is in the form of a chat room. There have been times I wanted to say hi to someone here in such a format but a PM was a bit burdensome.

It is something that I've considered. Just might be worth doing, in one form or another.

This opens a moderators nightmare. Chat is real time and makes people type things that they would not post to the forum.

Be careful what you ask for. I found that a "Shoutbox" on the website was a good middle of the road solution.

I would then scroll through it and any members that were not playing nice were banned from posting in the shoutbox.

How would it be different than PM's, which (I would hope) are also not moderated?

A shoutbox is seen by everyone when they are on the main index of the site. It is not intended for long back and forth conversation, but to just shout out something.

No, I mean how would private chat be any different than PM's..?
