Opinion, please please please.

Hi All,
I recently booked an appointment to perform a merchandising job. The Manager did not show up and they had to be there. I went back the next day to do it and I am requesting to be paid twice by the MSC, once for each visit. The scheduler thinks that is unreasonable. Thoughts?

You asked for opinions, so here's mine: I would have cleared it with the scheduler BEFORE returning to the location the second time.

Perhaps, but that aside, do you think it is an unreasonable request?

I think you just taught us a lesson. Even though you incurred the costs of making two visits, your agreement paid for one. In order to change the contract, you would need to contact the scheduler. For someone else (probably an attoney) to answer: did the absence of the manager void the contract and, if so, can the scheduler consider allowing two payments for two trips?

I would have checked before going a second time but I would also expect some kind of recompense for the visit that failed through no fault of your own, but not the full fee.

The OP used the term MSC. I am guessing it's the MSC that offers a lot of merchandising assignments.
Being that I am a merchandiser for actual merchandising companies and have been doing them since around 2013 and taking into consideration that this is a "dual" MSC/merchandising company, I believe that leaves this thread in an either/or category.

I would have put in for 30 minutes on the first visit, and if it had a place for comments, I would have put "manager not available"
Then contacted the MSC about if you were suppose to go back or not.
A lot of merchandising jobs say if you go the first time and it can't be done, then you don't go back, unless they give you a revisit for the job.
I have been doing merchandising for 26 years and that is the way, I have always done it..
Unless the instructions specifically say to contact the "help desk", or your manager, or someone else at the MSC for what to do, if contact person is not available.

This is the MERCHANDISING FORUM.
I think it completely depends on how much your visit paid and whether or not you had to drive a great distance to get there. Also, when the manager did not show, did you immediately contact the scheduler and inform them? You might get a "go" fee and meet in the middle with the MSC, but as far as expecting to receive full compensation for a job that was not completed...NO.

WhatFun: I can't say if it's unreasonable, because it's a request it would never occur to me to make. I have never returned to a merchandising site for a re-do without getting nailed down first what I would be paid for doing so.

However, I drive long distances for the jobs I do (minimum 45 minutes), so it's not like running down to the corner to re-do an assignment.

I do demos for a merch company. If something goes wrong, I ping the help desk and don't do anything until they get back to me. I do the same for shops. I had an appointment no show, so immediately sent an em to the scheduler. She gave me a $15 bonus if I tried and did a second attempt at getting the appointment done. She gave me a week to get it scheduled and of course, I was successful. Lesson: don't do anything without approval.
From a scheduler's standpoint, I agree with running it by your scheduler before making the second trip.

Also, if the job did not get done the first time, I could see you asking for something to cover your trip there. However, asking to be paid in full twice when the job could not be completed in full the first time, would seem a bit unreasonable to me.
