What would it take for you to switch?

For close to a year now (how time flies), I've been working directly for a company (no 3rd party stuff), and recently a 3rd party company approached me with a job offer.

It got me thinking, what would it take for me to switch jobs. It came down to four things.

1) Cash
2) Carrier path, say "olddog, do Merchandising for us for X Months/years, we promise you Y advancement"
3) Being intellectually challenged at the job
4) Respect from the new employer from the get go. I.E I am not chasing you, you follow up with me in a prompt manner, ect.

3rd party is always going to have ups and downs. They can make no promises because they have no guarantees of clients to provide you with work. Also, working directly for a company will always pay better because no middleman is taking a cut. There would be no doubt in my mind what to do, unless I had issues with the company/product I was working directly for. So...

1) Third party pays less due to middleman.
2) No company can promise advancement based on years of service. Advancement is based on your qualifications and open positions to advance to.
3) Either type of job can be intellectually challenging, but I suppose third party can come with new challenges each week.
4) Every employer would say they respect you, just as you would say you do a great job all the time. You won't know their culture until you work for them and they won't know your work ethic until you work for them.

No advancement or guarantees, but I currently get paid $3.50/hr more working 3rd party than I do for my W2 employer. The 3rd party is contracted to my employer for the same resets. The difference is no travel benefits, so I have to factor in travel expenses. In other words, it only works in my favor for about 100 mile radius.

But won't the 3rd party work disappear once the resets are complete? You will still have your regular employer, which I assume is a manufacturer. I am W2 with a 3rd party, so W2 doesn't make a difference in pay.

Both companies are merchandising companies. One contracts to the other for the same resets. When it's a local job I go with the 3rd party for the higher pay. For more distant locations I go with my W2 company for the travel benefits.
I would consider your situation different than what Old Dog is describing. By "directly for the company", I take that to mean being a vendor rep for their brand only. I would say you work for a merchandising company that finds reps for a variety of projects.

I'll be the first to acknowledge a 3rd party can't pay more than a 1st party, but last year I did 20,000 KM for a 3rd party, I doubt 1/10th of it was paid per KM.

Carrier wise, I've done merchandising for over 10 years, comes a point where you want more and feel type caste. Isn't this how jobs are suppose to work, you pay your dues, and you move upwards.

Challenges, I haven't felt challenged doing general merchandising in years except understanding what someone in a lab considers simple instructions or easy to do in the field. I want/need more to feel engaged with the job.

I feel like I would have a sense of these things during the interview process to help me decide.
