New to this

I am brand new to this mystery shopping but decided I'd try it out to earn some extra money since I just had my 3rd child. I have a full time job and have some down time in my office to look around on the internet. I need help. There are so many companies and it feels like each one I register with doesn't have work in my area. Is there a way to search by zip codes somewhere?

I really feel like I would be good at this because I do am a professional consumer with 3 boys ages 3 months, 9 years, and 11 years old. We are very active in the community and don't spend much time in our home. I am your typical working mom who takes advantage of sales, eats on the run, and grocery shops at many stores to get the right deals. I feel like I'm very detail oriented and have a keen eye/memory.

Any advice?

Spend some time on jobslinger seeing what firms routinely has shops in your area of the kind you might want, and sign up with those firms, first. Try one or two shops with easy (but low-paying) firms like MFI and CoRi before you do much that requires any real narrative and might put you out more than $10.

An update on me. I have now done 6 retail shops, 4 requiring purchases and narrative. I believe I have done a good job and I'm looking forward to seeing if they all pay. I have also done some fast food shops and have more scheduled for next week. I have 2 audits to do tonight. I am really enjoying this and hope that I have more opportunities in my area. I am willing to travel 30-45 miles for the right shops too. This may give me more chances to grow my shopping resume. I do have a question though... once you build relationships with schedulers in your area do they give you opportunities before they get posted on job boards are is it always first come first serve? I'm hoping to pick up jobs on the boards but it seems like when I get the notification emails (and I'm on the computer all of the time) they are already gone. I am currently signed up with 10 or more companies and think I can give all of them attention if they give me the opportunities. Feedback from other shoppers would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Heather
Generally schedulers are not allowed to give out jobs before they are posted. With some companies pre-post the schedulers, editors or others associated with the company may have the opportunity to snag the shops. What a scheduler can do for you is let you know when the shops are 'likely' to go up. And of course if the shops are not self-assign, they can choose the shopper out of those who apply for them who fit the demographic and rotation. You can do yourself a whole lot of favors by figuring out when your companies post shops and be there when they do.
Starting early with record keeping can make life easier. In addition to tracking when companies post shops, also Who shops whom, pay method/cycles, and contact info.

Regarding being contacted by schedulers for shops, that can happen when assignments need re-shopped, following a rejection or flake. They will also contact shoppers to do a shop with a tight time frame, usually toward the last third of the month. I like to think these circumstances are when a shopper's reputation comes into play.
