Trying to get started as a new Shopper

I am new to the form. I signed up for a mystery shopping job that was run by scammers. They took me for $2000 dollars my first time out. I am now trying to get the nerve to become a mystery shopper with the pros any good advice?

Any good advice that will help me to choose which jobs to take, and how do I go about registering to become a new Mystery Shopper

Welcome. I am sorry to hear of your misadventure.

The best way to learn quickly is to go to the New Mystery Shoppers area of the forum and read, read, read, the top dozen or so topics that are "pinned" to the top of the topic list. Then, us the list of companies found at the bottom of each page to start signing up with legitimate companies. You can use the forum to look for what other shoppers have to say about each company. Real MS companies never pay in advance and do not ask you to send large sums of money AND do not pay much for each assignment. YOU have to apply for a job with a real MS company; they will not just assign it out of the blue!

Good luck. We are here to help.

Based in MD, near DC
Shopping from the Carolinas to New York

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
Thanks walesmaven, I'll get started on reading first. Then I will proceed with the list of companies found on the pages as you stated.

You will never have to pay a fee to mystery shop.

A lot of people here recommend going through the list and signing up for companies. I recommend signing up for some and seeing what they have to offer; it's the only way you'll really know what's out there. Personally I like searching on this forum to find MSC's that offer the types of shops I like to perform.

You can also use the tool called "presto map" (google it) to see an offering of shops around you.

Shopping Santa Barbara and Goleta, CA.
Okay, I will be signing up for some of the companies that are closer to me in the beginning, and I'll see how that will work out. I will start slow and ease myself into things.

Hello, I am a new shopper.

Mod note: Hi there. Your three threads introducing yourself have been combined. No need to start more than one on the same subject. Thanks!

Best luck with real mystery shopping, but be realistic as you look at it. You got taken for $2,000 because you were looking for big money fast. That's how scammers win - they appeal to you by waving big money - and people jump. Real mystery shopping is not fast money OR easy money. It's hard work and the average mystery shopping job available to a new mystery shopper pays between $5 and $20.
Thanks Jay C, I'll keep those facts you've discussed in mine. I guess in away I was looking for big bucks fast, but that is not the type of business mystery shopping all about. I believe I have learned from my mistake the first lesson on being a shopper.
