New to Mystery Shopping

Greetings everyone,
I'm new to Mystery Shopping. I have done two auto dealer shop so far and received a "Good Job" from the Quality Auditor. Any suggestions such as do's and don't would be appreciated. I'm learning , but so far I think I'm going to enjoy it. I'm going for it as a business not just a hobby. I have been in a customer service career for 20 years so I know excellent customer service is what fuels the engine. I know I have to pay my dues with smaller paying jobs and I'm fine with that. Once again, suggestions for MSC that experience shoppers would recommend applying for so far I'm at six. I have a long way to go lol.

Great job on your two first shops. The best advice I have is to read, read, and read. Pull up to your computer with a cup of coffee or another beverage of choice and give yourself some time, at least an hour or two at first, to go over the various threads, articles, and sections of this forum that were designed to help folks with questions just like yours.

Start in the "New Mystery Shoppers" section of the forum with the 'sticky' threads there. Those are the ones that stay at the top of the list. Then go to the Mystery Shopper Magazine portion that has a link at the bottom of every forum page and read a few articles at the link, "New Mystery Shoppers Start Here." If you want a diversion to see what is said about a particular company, go to the "Official List of Mystery Shopping Companies" also linked at the bottom of every forum page. There you will find discussions of more than 200 companies grouped by company. Peruse current discussions or post your own question or comment in the sections of the forum.

To do this as a business be prepared for a journey that is more of a marathon than a sprint. One last thing - Have fun with it. smiling smiley

I am new too! I did start to do this a few years back but things happened and I had to put this on hold. I always thought it would be something I would like doing. The one issue I had before and it is still going to be a issue, is that I live in a small rural town so most shops are quite a few miles for me to travel. I hope once I pay my dues, I will be able to schedule several shops in one day, making it worth a out of town trip for me. Does anyone know if this is doable? A company allowing 4 or 5 shops in a day? After proving myself, of course.

Welcome sandralane! Many, if not most, shoppers try to do multiple shops per outing. You save time and gas by setting up routes for yourself. There is only one company I know of that limits the number of their shops you can perform in a day, but as an independent contractor they have no say in how many shops you perform for some other company that same day.

Sandralane, it's possible that being in an isolated rural area may work to your advantage. Market Force and Maritz have shops all over and very often there will not be enough shoppers in the rural areas. If you haven't already signed up with them do that now and you may find more work than you expect. You will, of course, have to be prepared to drive if you are in a really rural area. If the work is some distance from you, you may be able to get them to add a bonus. Depending on where you are, you may be sitting pretty.

Mary Davis Nowell. Based close to Fort Worth. Shopping Interstate 20 east and west, Interstate 35 north and south.
