New

I'm a new member to this site and also to mystery shopping. I joined ShadowShopper the bronze membership, and they won't let you apply for jobs without upgrading to the gold membership, and naturally you have to pay! So I don't have a clue where to begin, does someone out there know how I go about finding demo or merchandising jobs? Would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Merchandising (and I think demo work) is handled by NARMS.com Sign up there and you should be able to see opportunities available in your area. Since I don't merchandise, I don't know if you need to sign up with individual companies like you do with mystery shopping.
Thank you so much for the info. Do you know if they will hire someone who is totally unexperienced? Well I will find out for myself, thanks again. Oh another ? for you. You say that to mystery shop you have to sign up with individual companies? Do you mean individual mystery shopping companies, not companies like ex: Penny's etc?
Yes, sign up with mystery shopping companies. There's a list on this forum to help get you started. Also, try JobSlinger, a free site that helps you find shops in your area.

In this business we usually refer to the stores themselves, such as Penny's, as the 'client' and the outfits that are putting together the shops for the clients as the 'companies'. So yes, to shop a particular client you need to sign up with the company that is shopping for them.

As for the merchandising question. Every merchandiser starts at some point as inexperienced. My understanding is that the companies prefer experienced merchandisers, but if they need someone in your area your 'dm' or district manager, will work with you to get you started. Merchandisers seem to love or hate particular companies based on their 'dm' and seem to most frequently stop working for a particular company when there is a change in their 'dm'. Employment situations for merchandising seem to be more diverse than for mystery shopping. In some cases you actually are a part time employee, while in most you are an independent contractor. In some cases you are paid hourly door-to-door while in some cases it is flat fee for the job. Certainly an advantage of merchandising is that you have a regular schedule of when you are servicing various locations so the work is far more steady than mystery shopping, which is a visit-by-visit contract situation.
Thanks to Mert and Flash for your great information! Before reading Flash's comment on companies preferring expeienced merchandisers, I found out for myself online, that is for sure the case with all the companies advertising for help. So I'm happy that I was smart enough not to pay for the gold membership through ShadowShoppers! They naturally don't let you know that little bit of info.

Since most do require experience I am defeated before I begin! How does one get started? Don't have the time to find out, need to work now!
Think through things you have done in your life that could reasonably count as experience in a conversation. You probably have restocked something as a volunteer, put together toys for kids or knock down furniture, inventoried the supply closet at work for restocking, etc. The skills needed have never sounded terribly difficult, though you need the jargon. (Planogram is the schematic drawing of how a display is to go together or where the product belongs.) If you see some jobs near you, pick up the phone and call them to make your case.
