I am about to do my first shop tomorrow at McDonald's. Any advice? I have been reading through the posts for beginners. Maybe you tell me from you own experience the rookie mistakes you made.

Welcome to the forum. Best advice? Follow the instructions. No matter what, follow the instructions. Most rookie mistakes (including my own as a rookie!) were lack of following the instructions.

Rookie mistakes I made were paying with a credit card and not cash. Also had one rejected for getting to the location 5 minutes early. Make sure you order MEDIUM if that's what the instructions state. If they say "oh so that would be a combo" I say "only if it's a MEDIUM combo."

Not getting the receipt or losing one is a rookie mistake as well.

Advice - pay with plastic when instructions permit it - the cashier will often provide one when they won't with cash. Safeguard the receipts - even take a photo ASAP on your cell.

For any shop I do, whenever there is something that is special in the instructions that I might forget, like stay 20 minutes in store or take picture, I write it at the top of the guidelines so when I review the instructions one last time I will see it.

I have been doing this for 2 months now, I have done enough to learn a few things, know I need to add more shops to my resume. Any one out there with information on good mystery shops companies?

Give the cashier enough money so that she/he has to give you change back. Most of the time they will provide the receipt with the change plus, this will 'click' your brain to get one.
