16 years old, looking for some help to get started

Hey everyone, I'm a 16 year old college student. I am a photographer/filmer. Money is tight and mystery shopping sounded like a great way to make a little extra on the side. Any suggestions on how to get started for someone under 18?

Welcome to the forums! First, head on over to the New Mystery Shoppers area where the first 12 threads are all about getting started and basics that you will need to be aware of.

Then look first for shops testing compliance with age restrictions/IDs for alcohol and tobacco, since those seem to be very common and they are always looking for young persons.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
My understanding was you must be 18 in order to enter into a contract.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

Hi Filmer.

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately, I believe LisaSTL is correct when she suggests companies require shoppers to be 18 or older to enter into an agreement to be a shopper.

However, there might be a way for you to participate if you have an adult to tag along with. In general, there are some shops were a second person is allowed or even required (think many restaurant shops). You could go along to learn and assist. Also, there is a particular shop that requires an adult take a minor that could be 16 years old to attempt to purchase a specific product.

I hope that helps. If not, see you in two years!

Happily shopping Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut

what country are you in? In the US, it is rare to have a 16 year old in college.

I have seen some jobs that need a person under 18 to see if the video game store will sell them an adult rated game or another age compliance shop I can't think of right now....

i am under the impression that you have to be at least 18 to do most shops in the US, although I don't remember if I read anything about that since I would have ignored it as I am over 18...

i do think you need to have an adult work with you through.

in the US< it is possible for people under 18 to work as independent contractors....I don't know how it works specifically with signing the contract. Teens do sometimes sign employment agreements, maybe the parent cosigns?
