Being a mystery shopper means running your own small business, working as a contractor to multiple mystery shopping companies. They will not seek you out. You must seek them out.

You need to register with each company, providing your SS# and personal information. Some want you to take tests and you may be asked to provide writing samples. After being accepted to by a company, you will be able to log into their website and look for assignments in your area. Some companies allow you to self-assign the assignments. Other companies allow you to apply for each assignment and the scheduler notifies you if the assignment is assigned to you.

There is a lot of competition in most areas. My advice is to register with as many companies as possible - many of us here on the forum are registered with 150+ - and spend a lot of time reading and researching so you figure out how mystery shopping works and know how to set up your business. It's very time-consuming to get started. Don't get discouraged.

Good luck and happy shopping!
Hi Noellc,

Welcome to the forum. AustinMom is correct that you have to seek the companies out. Have a look at the sticky threads in the new member section for more relevant information on how to start your journey.

Have fun.

Hello Everybody, I'm new to mystery shopping. I think that it is going to be a very challenging position. Is that a correct statement?
Hi CatWoman,

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, you are correct in thinking there is a fairly steep learning curve to figure out many of the things about this profession. The most significant is to find work in your area. But it does get easier as you go and it can be quite rewarding. The forum can help significantly in that it gives you information about companies, assignments and other topics in bite-sized pieces. Perhaps the best advice is to go do some shops. Find some companies with shops in your area and do them for the experience. Don't worry as much about the income at first. This will help you to learn.

Good luck and have fun with it. smiling smiley

Hello everyone!

I am new to the mystery shopping world. Any advice on getting started would be great. The specific questions I had were:

-Are there any recommendations for companies that you can do individual/solo shops? Many of the ones I've looked at (especially for restaurants) require two adults. Considering I'm in the middle of a divorce, it'd be nice to do some restaurant shops where I could go alone.

-Is it a good idea to form an LLC or another entity for tax purposes? Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to track income?

Thanks so much,
