You've probably read that we sign up with numerous companies, there's a list in this forum. [www.mysteryshopforum.com] There are a couple of good ways to start, that take less time while you decide if ms'ing is for you. Sign up with MSPs that are known to have shops everywhere - Corporate International and MarketForce come to mind. And then there's JobSlinger. [www.jobslinger.com] It's a free site where you sign up and then search for jobs in your area. You'll sign up with the MSPs that appeal to you, and then apply for the shops at their sites.

Lots of legwork, but all from home.
There are 3 basic methods for finding jobs:
1) by directly checking the job boards on the websites of the companies you are signed up with.
2) by emails received from companies you are signed up with
3) by checking third party sites such as job boards on forums or Jobslinger.com

You will always need to be signed up with a company in order to accept a job because they need your demographic information as well as have you agree to their Independent Contractor Agreement with them. So method 3) at least lets you know who has shops in your area to make sure you are signed up with them so that you can quickly accept jobs by method 1) and 2).

Some people choose what I would consider to be 3a) and pay to sign up with a referral service, though if you are doing 1), 2) and 3) above plus getting signed up with more companies from a reputable list of companies such as the one here or at the MSPA or at Volition, a paid referral service is NOT likely to do you much good. This is why we keep reminding folks that, "You do not need to pay to shop!"
