Hi!

I'm curious about these post office shops I keep seeing. Seem to pay OK, but enough information is not given out before I commit to one. Can someone here enlighten me?

A and B shops are easy. (Box and Redi Post). The C shops, do not seem to be worth it...

They are not terribly difficult. For one of them you put together a package weighing about a pound to be shipped to a zip code other than the one that the post office is in. You take it to the post office, observe things like signage, supplies, what is said to you, mail the package and are reimbursed for the mailing fee up to a certain amount which will basically cover 1 pound within your state. The second variation is you go in with an item, purchase a mailer from the post office during your visit and ship it off. Other observations are about the same. Third variation is that you have an oversize parcel to ship. The reports are pretty straight forward and by now I feel sure they have worked out the kinks in the instructions so they aren't contradictory. The company that is now doing these shops has been doing them for about a year and is neither the slowest nor the speediest to pay (something to keep in mind with the oversize package as you will be waiting for a substantial reimbursement).

Has anyone done the new "D" scenario?

The random package shops? I want to see what I'm getting into before committing myself.

Same here!

Randon is the same as "A". It is a location that pops up to be shopped out of sequence. Same guidelines as the regular shops. That has been the case when I did one.

Only thing about Scenario A is that it has to be out of your zip code AND your postal zone, which for me is outside of my state. I have only a couple people that I would send a package to that are that far away.

I just talked to my scheduler for these shops and they are the same as a Scenario A. So I jst signed up for the last 2 in my area and they are self assigning if you meet the qua;ifactions.

I'm finding that annoying as well. The only people I know that far away are *too* far to mail something and get full reimbursement. The margin is really very small.

Sounds like its time to make some new friends...

This is where friends who need packages mailed come in. I already use my adult kids. Just mailed gift my son bought for his nephew, and my son was happy about the "free shipping". I love the post office shops. So easy now that I have "practice". I have a grand in northern california and son in mass. so I can always think of something. Plenty of friends outside my zip too.

CourtneyH; My son lives in Michigan so I send all my packages to him as I live in the Dayton, OH area. When I go to see him I get them back or if he comes here he brings them to me. Then I take all of the old Post Office markings off and resend them again. Just a hint to maybe help you out.

I also plan on taking PO shops when I visit my daughter up north. Then when I shop for myself, (already plan on buying some mustard from a local shop up there) I will simply mail it home, (no issues on how to pack to bring home) and do so for free shipping. I figure I can do that with several packages, depending on how much I shop. lol

What company offers the Post Office Shops?

Naming the company would be an ICA Violation.

I have done a couple of these PO shops. I have shipped out my area and out of the state, I try to keep everything with the other requirements as specified.

When CourtneyH and uclashop indicates they are running out of shippers, I wonder. 9 out of 10, you live and work in two different ZC. If your PO shop is five miles out them it is in a different postal zone.

Nobody is "too" far to mail anything. Why is that a barrier? All my PO shipping have been more than 30 miles out, so that I am following the guideline requirement.

Nowhere in the guidelines does it state that you cannot mail out of state, so why are you (they) limiting themselves? The cost and the reimbursment is the same. That's why it says "up to.."

I did a Post Office Shop this week. I had purchased a gift back in the summer that I mailed to a friend. I had to read the guidelines several times, a lot of detail, but filling out the report proved to be easy.

Yes, these have always been fairly simple. And because there usually is a line at the post office, you have an opportunity to pull out a memo pad while in line to remind you of the observations you need to make. Looking bored like all other people standing in line, you are free to look around. Most of my post offices have the line passing alongside the barrier with the work surface to address packages. I sometimes just use the pen on a chain to make my notes while standing in line and pocket my memo pad before reaching the head of the line. Others in line stare at the employees blankly--so do I to note tops, name tags and tidiness. Then at the window I can glance at pants/skirts and focus on the interaction details.

The only thing that has changed is the package needs to weigh over a pound now---at least 18 ounces. I put together care packages that weigh 2-3 pounds and see the reimbursement as a "coupon off" of the postage cost so maybe I only paid a dollar to ship that large box of fudge to someone.

I have done many of these shops and find them very easy. I have faced the same issue with family multiple zones away. A couple of suggestions: mail an old paperback or 2 to a VA hospital in the next major city or mail a bag of rice or canned food to a food pantry in another city in your state.
