The rules for audio recording vary from state to state and even area to area. That being said, in my area I do record shops using my digital voice recorder for my own review of the shop. These are recordings made in a public area where there really can be no expectation of privacy or may record phone calls where I have been notified on the phone by the company I am calling that 'the call may be recorded' for training purposes or whatever. I do no recording on behalf of companies for whom I am doing the work, either audio or video, to provide them with a recording. I don't place calls through a toll free number so that it can be recorded. I am happy to provide accurate written reports of what happened during the encounter, including direct quotes, but I am a reporter of observations, not a walking microphone or camera.
