I've never been embarassed to say I mystery shop, but most people I have spoken to don't know what it is, so I have to explain what it is. Then they respond saying that is a cool thing! I've worked in retail before I started having kids, so I knew mystery shoppers were out there.

If anything, I often tell people what I end up getting for free or severely discounted due to mystery shopping.

I have never felt embarrassed and tell friends and my husband what I do. He's been able to take advantage of some reimbursed meals due to it, so he doesn't complain. The only people that have given me an issue with it are people who work in retail because they generally don't like being shopped. They always tell me that they can pick out a mystery shopper a mile away. I have replied, "considering some of the poor service I have received, it seems like many people don't know that I'm a shopper."
I understand the OP's reluctance to call herself a Mystery Shopper. I have never liked shopping, so the term doesn't suit me exactly either. I mostly prefer bar/restaurant/hotel shops because that's what I would spend my time and money on anyway. Maybe you could find a better label for yourself. I sometimes tell people that I do freelance reviewing, which is more accurate for most of the jobs I take. I'm not actually buying retail.
