Must I register as a small business?

Hello all!

I am currently in the research phase of becoming a potential mystery shopper. From what I have read, a mystery shopper is considered an independent contractor. Is it necessary to register as a small business? Should I come up with a name for it and use it on my business card before I apply? I also read that earnings $400 or less can be filed on a personal return, but that a 1099 will be issued for earnings of $600.

Your knowledge is much appreciated!

PBeth,
Good for you! There is a wealth of info here for new and potential shopps. Pull up a chair, pour yourself something warm and read, read read.

Sometimes I wish I could read all of this without sitting at my computer! My lap top fizzled a few years ago and I haven't been able to afford a new one ~ nor a nifty tablet or smartphone, although I doubt I could read happily off a smartphone anyway. I'd love to do more reading on here in my comfy chair! : )

How long have you been mystery shopping? Do you find it worth your time and the money to have such a large mystery shopping radius? Just curious.
I have been MSing since 2005. Since I do mostly video shops I find it very, very worthwhile to travel and do many shops along a route. Even non-video routes can be very profitable if you arrange to take shops in out-of-the-way locations that may include huge bonuses.
