Manager recognized me from facebook

I did a shop at an office supply store in a nearby town yesterday. The manager greeted me at one point. She looked very familiar, and she thought I looked familiar too. We spoke of it and realized she was the roommate of a friend of mine. I had never met her before and the friend is an ex-boyfriend that I have stayed friends with and go to occasional concerts and events with. I couldn't remember if I told him I had been mystery shopping the last time I saw him (I only see him a few times a year because we are both very busy). I emailed the company to let them know about the situation because I didn't know if this would be an issue. Do you think I will still be paid for the shop? I don't think she knew I was a shopper, but was afraid if she went home and told my friend she met me, if I had told him and he remembered I was mystery shopping, what if he put it together and mentioned it to her. What would you have done? I am still new to Mystery shopping. Have you ever been nervous about being conspicuous?

I try really hard to be completely forgettable when mystery shopping.

Personally I would not have entered into a "Don't I know you from somewhere..." conversation while on assignment. Comments about the weather, local sports etc are OK for me, but nothing more.

You are probably just fine. She will receive the report in a few weeks and will have seen thousands of customers in the meantime.

Next time, just smile vaguely and say, "Mmmm... maybe" and then change the subject to what you are purchasing.
phlutter,
Missy has given good advice for the future.

For now, if you have simply told your scheduler in writing about an unepected encounter with someone who recognized you but whom you had not met, and told of the connection, you have done the right thing. Even if they do not pay you for the shop (although I suspect they will) you should not be penalized because you reported the incident, which is all that anyone could have done at that point. You did the right thing by informing the MSC.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
Thanks for the advice. Next time I will take Missy's advice! I wasn't expecting something like that to happen! HA HA! I did think it was right to let the company know, however. It wasn't like the shop payed a lot anyway. It made me think... what happens if you run into someone that really does know you and you didn't know worked somewhere? (like, what if it is someone you went to high school with or something?).

I signed up for one shop that did not tell the location until after you sign up, and found out it was somewhere my sister worked. I, obviously, couldn't complete that shop, so I called and told them so they could schedule someone else.
By the way, Missy, the unfortunate thing is, I don't think I have a forgettable face. sad smiley HA HA! maybe it is more forgettable than I think. I haven't been doing this long enough to go too many places multiple times, so, hopefully I am forgettable enough. There are places I don't know if I will go second times, like some of the car dealerships, particularly the ones where I was introduced to a manager. Unfortunately I have a very uncommon name too! I will have to check these boards for tips on being forgettable winking smiley
phlutter,
Most shop instructions that address the issue seem to say that if you walk in and then realize that someone that you know works there, you are to leave without completing the shop with them. Some evn go into great detail about how close the relationship might be!

phlutter - this is part of the fun of the job, figuring out how to approach each job.

It's kind of like getting ready for an acting job.

If you have a distinctive style or face or physique, wear something dull.

If you have a distinctive name, use an alias. I looked in baby books and found "vanilla" versions of my weird name ("Missy" is an alias of mine)

good luck!
Missy- a couple of the shops required I use my real name sad smiley They were auto dealer shops and they took my drivers license copy because of a test drive .

Walesmave - none of the shops I have done have told me how to address that in their descriptions sad smiley

Hopefully, It won't be an issue again. Maybe I need to get some different wigs! I'll keep working on being less memorable (that sounds really weird).
No, don't do wigs!

Then you'll be "that lady in the wig."

I'm wearing my standard MS outfit today. Hair in ponytail, minimal jewelry/makeup, white shirt, khakis, clogs. Boring! And that's the point!
I was just kidding about the wigs winking smiley I look terrible in a wig. I can't do much with my hair because I have very short hair. I look better with short hair, or I would consider growing it out... I always wear minimal makeup. I think it's the combination of my face and glasses that people recognize. If I had long hair, it would be easier to wear it up once, down once, etc!
Hi, I'm very new at this so, can someone tell me how do I apply for jobs? I only see sections like this for new shoppers nothing telling me how to get jobs.I really want to do this and will appreciate all the help I can get.
Thank U
Jackie
Jackiewms- I found some different secret shop sites on Jobslinger and just applied to a bunch of them. Some companies don't seem to have any shops in my area, but I stay with them and keep watching "just in case". Sometimes I am not fast enough to get jobs sad smiley I am still pretty new and am only with 11-15 companies right now... I am getting used to using their systems and juggling a few shops. I, personally, think I will be able to handle more companies soon, as you can only shop specific places every so many days... As a vegetarian I find it hard to do food shops sad smiley I have been looking for some Subway shops and have seen some, but they always get scooped up fast!! I thought there was a good area on this forum for info about getting started that helped me out a lot... try this link [www.mysteryshopforum.com]

good luck!
I have been trying to get some of those jobs, and still do not know what company has them, can you point me to the company?

Thank you
Hi Elizabeth -

No one will tell you specifically what MSC is shopping what store/restaurant/bar/retail outlet, etc...

If you read your "Independent Contractors Agreement" (ICA - the virtual paper agreement you sign when you sign up with an MSC), AND, the "Rules of the Forum" - you will find that we are not permitted to "reveal the clients of mystery shopping companies". (that is the Forum Rule)

You will need to just start going down the list and applying at the different mystery shopping companies and then checking their job boards.

That list is at the bottom of every page on the forum.

Jackie,

Did you go back to your first post where you posted under "Member Introductions"?

I posted your "Welcome to the Forums Letter" - a jumpstart for you to give you some advice on getting started.

In that letter I gave you links to start reading, threads to pay attention to, etc.

Here's the link for your "Member Introductions" thread: [www.mysteryshopforum.com]

I have still been searching for what companies have which shops too... I am slowly finding them... one by one. I think it will take a little time! I am just signing up with different companies and then seeing what they have to offer smiling smiley I was excited when I saw that a company I had signed up with had one of my favorite grocery stores! I hadn't seen it before. Maybe they just started contracting with that company, or maybe that company doesn't required to be shopped as frequently. It's hard to say. I am excited about doing that shop, however!
